Learning

Outline

International Relations and Politics is designed for 13–15-year-olds who want to understand how governments operate, why conflicts arise, and how global decisions are made. Students will explore political theories, systems of governance, and key issues such as war, diplomacy, media influence, and resource distribution. They’ll learn to analyse different viewpoints, debate pressing global topics, and think critically about how power is used in society. We don’t follow a fixed curriculum—our tutors tailor the course to the group’s interests, making discussions dynamic, relevant, and thought-provoking. The course also includes a masterclass focused on teamwork and debating, along with a reflection session to review personal goals and progress.

Teaching methodology

Learning in a small group (no more than 8 students and often fewer) means that you get quality time with your teacher and ask as many questions as you like! Through interactive learning, our teachers will guide you through new concepts and assign you practice tasks to build your knowledge and skills. You will also have an opportunity for group work, independent research, and homework assignments to be discussed in class. Small classes mean everyone gets to have their say, and students learn from debating with one another, as well as from their tutor.

The Oxford Summer Courses experience

Get ready to explore power, policy, and global change. On our International Relations and Politics course for ages 13–15, your child will examine how countries interact, how governments make decisions, and how global events shape our world. They’ll discuss key political theories, explore international organisations, and debate current affairs. With no fixed curriculum, students are encouraged to share their interests when they apply — and our expert tutors will tailor the course to reflect those topics wherever possible.

In classes of no more than 8 students (and often fewer), your child will benefit from focused, discussion-based learning. Lessons include tutor-led exploration, group work, and space for students to express and challenge ideas in a respectful and stimulating environment. Dedicated study sessions provide time for homework, reading, and reflection, with on-course staff available for extra support.

Outside the classroom, the course is brought to life through a full social programme — from themed events and off-site excursions to a graduation ceremony and celebratory disco. It’s a summer designed to build understanding, confidence, and global awareness.
