Learning
Outline
Medicine is designed for 18–24-year-olds with a passion for healthcare and a desire to explore the field beyond traditional theory. Students will examine various aspects of the medical industry, from diagnosing symptoms to understanding the challenges faced by modern healthcare systems, such as funding crises and patient care. The course will allow students to explore their tutor’s specialism, whether it’s cardiology, surgery, or the future of medical treatments. Students will delve into advanced clinical theory, work through case studies involving essential physiology, and engage with contemporary public health debates and critical analysis of medical research. This course offers a comprehensive approach to medicine, encouraging students to consider the practical, ethical, and global challenges within the field. We don’t follow a fixed curriculum—our tutors tailor the course to the group’s interests, making learning both engaging and relevant. The course also includes a masterclass on critical thinking, along with a reflection session to track progress and set new goals.
Teaching methodology
Learn the Oxford way with tutorial-style teaching. Your expert tutor will foster self-directed learning and critical thinking through interactive seminars in small groups (no bigger than 8). During your course, you will complete two pieces of independent work (essays or problem sheets), which your tutor will then evaluate in either a 1:1 or 2:1 tutorial. Tutorials will provide you with the opportunity to discuss your work and feedback with your tutor and learn new perspectives from your classmates. On completion of the course, you'll receive a certificate and letter of recommendation from your tutor.
The city of Oxford, with nearly 1,000 years of academic history, has a long tradition of medical discovery, from the development of penicillin to pioneering research in genetics and neuroscience. As part of the 18–24 Medicine programme, you’ll live in a city shaped by innovation in science and healthcare. The city of Oxford provides an inspiring backdrop for learning, with its renowned museums, historic setting, and long tradition of breakthroughs that have transformed medicine.
Accommodation is in single or twin rooms, depending on the tier. Plus lets you choose single or twin; Superior guarantees an ensuite; and Premier provides concierge-selected rooms. All include shared spaces and on-course staff support.
Meals are provided on a half-board basis (breakfast and dinner), served in college dining halls or at selected local restaurants. Students arrange their own lunch. All dietary requirements are catered for.
The Oxford Summer Courses Experience
Medicine blends scientific discovery with compassionate care — a field where every breakthrough has the power to change lives. In Oxford, learners explore clinical reasoning, human physiology, pathology, and the evolving landscape of global healthcare. Through case-based discussions and ethical debate, students examine how medical professionals diagnose problems, make decisions under pressure, and improve patient outcomes.
Tutorial-style learning with no more than eight students encourages confident participation and critical thinking. Two pieces of independent work — whether essays or problem sets — are supported through personalised, tutorial-style feedback that develops academic clarity and professional communication. With college-style living, enrichment activities, and peers from around the world, students experience an inspiring introduction to medical study and future healthcare pathways. Every participant leaves with a completion certificate and a tailored tutor recommendation to support university and career ambitions.
