Outline
Classical Civilisation is designed for 16–17-year-olds who want to explore the legacies of ancient cultures. Students will study history, philosophy, and methodology, learning to understand the social and cultural contexts of ancient civilisations. They'll analyse the causes and impacts of key historical events and conflicts, and examine political arguments that have shaped modern society. We don’t follow a fixed curriculum—our tutors tailor the course to the group’s interests, making learning engaging and relevant. The course includes tutorial Q&A sessions, an academic skills masterclass, expert speakers, and visits to different Oxford colleges. Students will also have the opportunity to attend a university fair to explore future career pathways.
Teaching methodology
Learn the Oxford way with tutorial-style teaching. Your expert tutor will foster self-directed learning and critical thinking through interactive seminars in small groups (no bigger than 8). During your course, you will complete two pieces of independent work (essays or problem sheets), which your tutor will then evaluate in either a 1:1 or 2:1 tutorial. Tutorials will provide you with the opportunity to discuss your work and feedback with your tutor and learn new perspectives from your classmates. On completion of the course, you'll receive a certificate and letter of recommendation from your tutor.
The city of Oxford, with nearly 1,000 years of academic history, has long been associated with the study of the ancient world, from classical philosophy to archaeology and literature. As part of the 16–17 Classical Civilisation programme, you’ll live in a city shaped by scholarship and tradition. The city of Oxford provides an inspiring backdrop for learning, with its historic libraries, museums, and long tradition of exploring the ideas and cultures of Greece, Rome, and beyond.
Accommodation is in single or twin rooms, depending on the tier. Plus lets you choose single or twin; Superior guarantees an ensuite; Premier provides concierge-selected rooms. All include shared spaces and on-course staff support.
Meals are half-board (breakfast and dinner), served in college dining halls or selected local restaurants, with students arranging their own lunch. All dietary requirements are catered for.

In Oxford’s inspiring academic environment, learners dive into literature, art, politics, mythology, and archaeology, uncovering how ancient Greece and Rome still shape the way we think today.
Seminar-style classes (maximum eight students) allow for lively debate, close reading of ancient texts, and guided source analysis. Students also complete two pieces of independent work, developed through personalised tutorial-style feedback that sharpens their communication and critical thinking skills. With social activities, historic college settings, and a diverse community of peers, this course brings the ancient world to life — and equips students with lasting confidence in the way they interpret the world around them.
The British Museum, located in the heart of London, is one of the world's most renowned museums, housing a vast and diverse collection of over 8 million historical artefacts from all corners of the globe. Founded in 1753, the museum covers over 2 million years of human history, from ancient civilisations to modern times.
Visiting Warwick Castle is an opportunity to explore the rich history of this magnificent medieval fortress. It dates back to the 11th century and has played a significant role in English history. Students can explore the castle's impressive collection of buildings and exhibitions, as well as witness jousting tournaments, falconry displays, and other live shows.
The Tower of London is a historic castle and fortress that has served as a royal palace, prison, and even a zoo over the centuries. Visitors can explore its impressive collection of buildings and exhibitions, including the iconic White Tower, the Crown Jewels, and the medieval palace. They can also learn about the infamous prisoners who were held in the tower over the centuries, including Anne Boleyn and Guy Fawkes.
Visiting Westminster in London is a must-see for anyone interested in the city's rich history and iconic landmarks. This historic district is located in the heart of London and boasts several of the city's most famous attractions, including the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, and Buckingham Palace.

Visiting Portsmouth offers an opportunity to explore the rich maritime history of the UK. The city has played a significant role in the country's naval history, and students can learn about this at the historic dockyard, which is home to several iconic ships. At Oxford Summer Courses, the safeguarding and wellbeing of our students aged 16-17 is our highest priority. All staff are fully trained in safeguarding policies and procedures, including enhanced DBS checks. We provide a safe and supportive environment with 24/7 on-site security, supervision when necessary, and curfews to ensure a secure atmosphere.
