Learning

Outline

Neuroscience is designed for 16–17-year-olds who are fascinated by the brain and its complexities. Students will explore the brain’s chemistry, structure, and its impact on how we think, feel, and act. They’ll dive deep into topics like the nervous system, cognition, sensory functions, and the brain’s circuits and systems, gaining a comprehensive understanding of how the brain drives behaviour and emotions. Through a mix of solo and group study, they’ll sharpen their critical thinking and analytical skills while uncovering the latest discoveries in neuroscience. We don’t follow a fixed curriculum—our tutors tailor the course to the group’s interests, ensuring an engaging and relevant learning experience. The course also includes a masterclass on critical thinking and collaboration, as well as a reflection session to track their progress and set new goals.

Teaching methodology

Learn the Oxford way with tutorial-style teaching. Your expert tutor will foster self-directed learning and critical thinking through interactive seminars in small groups (no bigger than 8). During your course, you will complete two pieces of independent work (essays or problem sheets), which your tutor will then evaluate in either a 1:1 or 2:1 tutorial. Tutorials will provide you with the opportunity to discuss your work and feedback with your tutor and learn new perspectives from your classmates. On completion of the course, you'll receive a certificate and letter of recommendation from your tutor.

Stay in our Cambridge Summer School

The city of Cambridge, with more than 800 years of academic tradition, has played a leading role in advancing our understanding of the brain—from early studies of anatomy to modern breakthroughs in neuroscience and cognition. As part of the 16–17 Neuroscience programme, you’ll live in a city defined by discovery and inquiry. The city of Cambridge provides an inspiring backdrop for learning, with its historic colleges, world-class museums, and a tradition of exploring how the mind and nervous system shape human experience.

Accommodation

Accommodation is in single or twin rooms, depending on the tier. Plus lets you choose single or twin; Superior guarantees an ensuite; Premier provides concierge-selected rooms. All include shared spaces and on-course staff support.

Food and catering

Meals are provided on a half-board basis, including breakfast and dinner. Meals are served at the accommodation or at local restaurants, offering a variety of dining options.

The Oxford Summer Courses Experience

Neuroscience explores how the brain works — how we think, learn, remember, and experience the world. In Cambridge, students stay in college accommodation and learn in a city known for pioneering breakthroughs in science and medicine. A full programme of social activities and cultural excursions helps them build confidence and independence while connecting with students from around the world in an inspiring academic environment.

Teaching takes place in small seminar-style groups (maximum 8 students), guided by expert tutors who tailor topics to the group’s interests — from neural communication and memory to neurotechnology and disease. Students complete two independent assignments and discuss their ideas through personalised 1:1 or 2:1 tutorial-style feedback. By the end of the course, they gain stronger analytical and scientific communication skills, along with a certificate of completion and a personalised tutor recommendation to support their future study in neuroscience or related fields.

Jörn Q
PhD Biological Sciences, University of Cambridge - Alex is a PhD candidate at the MRC Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit. His main research focus is to understand how our memory systems work. In the US (UC Davis) and in Germany, he worked on the effect of acute stress on memory. For his doctoral research, Alex is investigating how prior knowledge in form of schemata influences the acquisition of new information using immersive virtual reality.
Dorian M
PhD Cognition and Brain Science, University of Cambridge - Dorian has a variety of teaching and professional experience including as a counsellor (Lifeline Australia), platoon commander (Australian Army), and residential care worker (Unisson Disability). His research focuses on the neural origins of intelligent behaviour. “How do honey bees solve an abstract conceptual problem?”, “How can brains solve complex problems with simple network functionality”, and “What brain mechanisms are involved in decision-making when humans are uncertain”.
Dr Luca P
PhD, University of Cambridge - Dr Luca Passamonti is a Behavioural Neurologist who has trained at the interface between Neurology & Psychiatry, using methods from the field of Cognitive Neuroscience. His ultimate career aims are to study the brain mechanisms that are responsible for cognitive and emotional problems in a broad range of neuro-psychiatric disorders. For instance, he considers the neural underpinnings of personality traits like impulsivity and its role in neurodegenerative disorders (i.e., the fronto-temporal lobar degeneration - FTLD - spectrum). Improving our knowledge of the neurological roots of personality is not only of interest theoretically but has also the potential to lead to new approaches to assess and treat complex neuro-psychiatric diseases. Dr Passamonti has over 12 years of research and clinical experience in cognitive neuroscience and considerable expertise in advanced techniques commonly used in experimental as well as clinical neurology and psychiatry.

"What I liked about my tutor was how important it was, to her, to get to know me first and my personality, learn about what I liked most about Neuroscience, and find out what I'm curious about. She made sure to relate the information she taught me to real life which is really nice."
