Learning
Outline
International Relations and Politics is designed for 13–15-year-olds who are interested in how political systems work and how global events shape the world. Students will explore different political theories, learn how countries are governed, and understand the causes of conflict. They’ll also examine current issues like the role of the media in politics and the ethical questions surrounding resource distribution. The course encourages critical thinking about how societies function and how power is distributed. We don’t follow a fixed curriculum—our tutors tailor the course to the group’s interests, making learning dynamic and relevant. The course also includes a masterclass on teamwork and debating, along with a reflection session to help students track their goals and progress.
Teaching methodology
Learning in a small group (no more than 8 students and often fewer) means that you get quality time with your teacher and ask as many questions as you like! Through interactive learning, our teachers will guide you through new concepts and assign you practice tasks to build your knowledge and skills. You will also have an opportunity for group work, independent research, and homework assignments to be discussed in class. Small classes mean everyone gets to have their say, and students learn from debating with one another, as well as from their tutor.
The city of Cambridge, with over 800 years of academic tradition, has long been a centre for political thought, diplomacy, and global debate. From shaping ideas of governance to influencing international policy, Cambridge has played a role in how nations understand their place in the world. As part of the 13–15 International Relations and Politics programme, your child will live in a city defined by discussion and discovery. The city of Cambridge provides an inspiring backdrop for learning, with its historic colleges, renowned libraries, and a tradition of exploring how countries interact on the global stage.
Accommodation is available in single or twin rooms, depending on the tier chosen. Plus students can choose single or twin, Superior guarantees an ensuite, and Premier provides concierge-selected rooms. All options include shared spaces and on-course staff for support.
Meals are provided on a full-board basis, with breakfast, lunch, and dinner included. Students eat in the college dining hall or at local restaurants. All dietary requirements are catered for.
The Oxford Summer Courses Experience
Politics and international relations help us understand how society works — and how it can change. This course invites students to explore global issues such as climate policy, leadership, social change, and international peace. Through dynamic discussions, collaborative decision-making, and real policy scenarios, students discover the power of ideas and the importance of understanding different cultures and perspectives.
Each weekday includes small seminar-style lessons (maximum 8 students), where expert tutors guide learners to question assumptions and articulate arguments clearly. Afternoons blend teamwork, debates, and practical challenges that mirror real-life diplomacy — such as resolving crises or negotiating agreements. With engaging social activities and supportive staff throughout the week, students develop confidence in speaking up, listening actively, and thinking critically about the world around them. They leave inspired to stay curious — and to play their part in shaping tomorrow.
