Learning
Outline
Philosophy is designed for 13–15-year-olds who are curious about life’s big questions and want to learn how to think critically and argue persuasively. Students will explore key philosophical ideas, analyse influential thinkers, and develop skills in reasoning, debate, and logical thinking. They’ll learn how to build strong arguments—and how to challenge them—through discussion, reflection, and analysis. We don’t follow a fixed curriculum—our tutors tailor the course to the group’s interests, making each experience thought-provoking, engaging, and unique. The course also includes a masterclass on skills like teamwork and debating, as well as a reflection session to help students review their goals and progress.
Teaching methodology
Learning in a small group (no more than 8 students and often fewer) means that you get quality time with your teacher and ask as many questions as you like! Through interactive learning, our teachers will guide you through new concepts and assign you practice tasks to build your knowledge and skills. You will also have an opportunity for group work, independent research, and homework assignments to be discussed in class. Small classes mean everyone gets to have their say, and students learn from debating with one another, as well as from their tutor.
The city of Oxford, with nearly 1,000 years of academic history, has been associated with influential thinkers such as John Locke, Isaiah Berlin, and Mary Midgley. As part of the 13–15 Philosophy programme, your child will live in a city shaped by debate, reflection, and new ideas. The city of Oxford provides the perfect environment to question, explore, and be inspired, with its historic colleges, rich traditions, and long-standing culture of intellectual inquiry.
Accommodation is in single or twin rooms, depending on the tier chosen. Classic students are assigned a room, Plus students can choose single or twin, Superior guarantees an ensuite, and Premier provides concierge-selected rooms. All options include shared spaces and on-course staff for support.
Meals are provided on a full-board basis, with breakfast, lunch, and dinner included. Students eat in the college dining hall or at local restaurants. All dietary requirements are catered for.
The Oxford Summer Courses Experience
Get ready to question everything. On our Philosophy course for ages 13–15, your child will explore life’s biggest questions — from ethics and free will to justice, reality, and the nature of knowledge. They’ll examine theories from some of the greatest thinkers in history and debate ideas that have shaped society. With no fixed curriculum, students are encouraged to share their philosophical interests when they apply — and our expert tutors will tailor the course content to suit their passions wherever possible.
With classes capped at no more than 8 students (and often fewer), they’ll benefit from plenty of one-on-one guidance and the space to develop their own voice. Through thought-provoking discussions, engaging activities, and tutor-led exploration, they’ll sharpen their reasoning, logic, and argumentation skills. Directed study time is built into the schedule, giving them the chance to reflect, read independently, and dive deeper into the ideas that inspire them.
Beyond the classroom, students enjoy a varied schedule of social and cultural activities — from city adventures and games nights to a final graduation ceremony and disco. It’s a summer built around curiosity, creativity, and connection.
