Learning
Outline
International Relations is designed for 16–17-year-olds who are interested in understanding global political dynamics. Students will explore key topics such as the origins of nationalism, the role of states in the international community, and theoretical approaches to international relations. The course will also cover pressing global issues, including the difference between preventing and pre-empting war, and will closely analyse specific conflicts to gain a broader understanding of our world’s successes and challenges. Students will develop critical thinking skills and gain a deeper understanding of the nature of diplomacy and the causes of conflict. We don’t follow a fixed curriculum—our tutors tailor the course to the group’s interests, ensuring that the learning experience is both engaging and relevant. The course also includes a masterclass on critical thinking and a reflection session to track progress and set new goals.
Teaching methodology
Learn the Oxford way with tutorial-style teaching. Your expert tutor will foster self-directed learning and critical thinking through interactive seminars in small groups (no bigger than 8). During your course, you will complete two pieces of independent work (essays or problem sheets), which your tutor will then evaluate in either a 1:1 or 2:1 tutorial. Tutorials will provide you with the opportunity to discuss your work and feedback with your tutor and learn new perspectives from your classmates. On completion of the course, you'll receive a certificate and letter of recommendation from your tutor.
The city of Cambridge, with over 800 years of academic tradition, has been a centre for political thought, diplomacy, and debate that continues to shape global affairs. From early discussions of governance to modern research on international relations, Cambridge has long influenced how nations interact. As part of the 16–17 International Relations programme, you’ll live in a city defined by dialogue and discovery. The city of Cambridge provides an inspiring backdrop for learning, with its historic colleges, renowned libraries, and a tradition of exploring how politics and diplomacy shape our world.
Accommodation is in single or twin rooms, depending on the tier. Plus lets you choose single or twin; Superior guarantees an ensuite; Premier provides concierge-selected rooms. All include shared spaces and on-course staff support.
Meals are provided on a half-board basis, including breakfast and dinner. Meals are served at the accommodation or at local restaurants, offering a variety of dining options.
The Oxford Summer Courses Experience
How do countries cooperate — and why do they sometimes collide? In Cambridge, students explore the ideas, institutions, and challenges shaping international politics today. They’ll debate real-world issues like global security, development, diplomacy, climate responsibility, and human rights, discovering how big decisions are made on the world stage — and how individuals can influence them.
Small seminars (maximum eight students) ensure active participation, with expert tutors guiding discussion and adapting topics to match students’ interests and viewpoints. Independent assignments are taken further in tutorial-style feedback sessions, helping learners build clarity, confidence, and persuasive argumentation. Combined with life in a Cambridge college, cultural exploration, and a global network of peers, students finish the course with sharper critical thinking, a certificate of completion, and a personalised tutor recommendation to support future aspirations in politics, law, or global affairs.
