Learning
Outline
International Development is designed for 16–17-year-olds who want to explore the challenges and opportunities facing the world’s poorest countries. Students will examine the gap between developed and developing countries, the impact of globalization, and the role of the international community in addressing global inequality. They’ll explore how development is shaped and learn what can be done to help improve the lives of people in need. We don’t follow a fixed curriculum—our tutors tailor the course to the group’s interests, making learning engaging and relevant. The course includes tutorial Q&A sessions, an academic skills masterclass, expert speakers, and visits to different Oxford colleges. Students will also have the opportunity to attend a university fair to explore future career pathways.
Teaching methodology
Learn the Oxford way with tutorial-style teaching. Your expert tutor will foster self-directed learning and critical thinking through interactive seminars in small groups (no bigger than 8). During your course, you will complete two pieces of independent work (essays or problem sheets), which your tutor will then evaluate in either a 1:1 or 2:1 tutorial. Tutorials will provide you with the opportunity to discuss your work and feedback with your tutor and learn new perspectives from your classmates. On completion of the course, you'll receive a certificate and letter of recommendation from your tutor.
The city of Oxford, with nearly 1,000 years of academic history, has been associated with global ideas and research that influence progress and development around the world. As part of the 16–17 International Development programme, you’ll live in a city shaped by debate, analysis, and international perspectives. The city of Oxford provides an inspiring backdrop for learning, with its long tradition of exploring how societies grow, adapt, and respond to global challenges.
Accommodation is in single or twin rooms, depending on the tier. Plus lets you choose single or twin; Superior guarantees an ensuite; Premier provides concierge-selected rooms. All include shared spaces and on-course staff support.
Meals are half-board (breakfast and dinner), served in college dining halls or selected local restaurants, with students arranging their own lunch. All dietary requirements are catered for.
The Oxford Summer Courses Experience
How can we create fairer, stronger, and more sustainable societies? In Oxford, students explore the key ideas driving global development — from poverty reduction and public health to education, climate resilience, and economic reform. Through debate and real case analysis, they uncover the challenges and opportunities shaping communities around the world, developing empathy and informed perspectives on global change.
Seminar-style learning (maximum eight students) encourages every student to share their views and question assumptions, while expert tutors adapt content to match the group’s interests and curiosity. Independent assignments help develop analytical skills and are refined further in tutorial-style feedback sessions. Paired with life in a historic Oxford college, cultural excursions, and a diverse international peer group, students finish the course with stronger critical thinking, a certificate of completion, and a personalised tutor recommendation — supporting future ambitions in development, policy, and global impact.
