Outline
International Development is designed for 18–24-year-olds who are passionate about addressing global inequality and understanding the complexities of human development. Students will explore the impact of the UN’s 2015 Sustainable Development Goals and critically examine the theories and opinions surrounding migration and its effect on communities and cultures. The course will cover the physical, social, economic, and political dimensions of development and post-development, giving students the tools to critically analyse the changing landscape of international development. We don’t follow a fixed curriculum—our tutors tailor the course to the group’s interests, making learning both engaging and relevant. The course also includes a masterclass on critical thinking, along with a reflection session to track progress and set new goals.
Teaching methodology
Learn the Oxford way with tutorial-style teaching. Your expert tutor will foster self-directed learning and critical thinking through interactive seminars in small groups (no bigger than 8). During your course, you will complete two pieces of independent work (essays or problem sheets), which your tutor will then evaluate in either a 1:1 or 2:1 tutorial. Tutorials will provide you with the opportunity to discuss your work and feedback with your tutor and learn new perspectives from your classmates. On completion of the course, you'll receive a certificate and letter of recommendation from your tutor.
The city of Oxford, with nearly 1,000 years of academic history, has long been a centre for debate on global issues, from poverty and education to sustainability and human rights. As part of the 18–24 International Development programme, you’ll live in a city shaped by discussion, research, and ideas that look beyond borders. The city of Oxford provides an inspiring backdrop for learning, with its libraries, museums, and long tradition of engaging with challenges that affect the wider world.
Accommodation is in single or twin rooms, depending on the tier. Plus lets you choose single or twin; Superior guarantees an ensuite; and Premier provides concierge-selected rooms. All include shared spaces and on-course staff support.
Meals are provided on a half-board basis (breakfast and dinner), served in college dining halls or at selected local restaurants. Students arrange their own lunch. All dietary requirements are catered for.

How can we build a fairer, more sustainable world? International Development explores the economic, social, and political forces shaping global progress — from poverty and education to health systems, climate resilience, and humanitarian action. In Oxford, students examine real case studies and competing development strategies, learning how policy decisions and global partnerships influence the lives of communities around the world.
Tutorial-style learning in groups capped at eight encourages thoughtful debate, careful use of evidence, and confidence in communicating ideas. Two independent assignments receive personalised, tutorial-style feedback that sharpens research and problem-solving skills. With enrichment activities, college-style living, and peers from different cultural backgrounds, students are immersed in global perspectives inside and outside the classroom. Each participant leaves with a completion certificate, a tailored tutor recommendation, and a clearer sense of the pathways available in international development and related fields.

Founded in 1753, the museum covers over 2 million years of human history, from ancient civilisations to modern times.
Visiting Warwick Castle is an opportunity to explore the rich history of this magnificent medieval fortress. It dates back to the 11th century and has played a significant role in English history. Students can explore the castle's impressive collection of buildings and exhibitions, as well as witness jousting tournaments, falconry displays, and other live shows.
The Tower of London is a historic castle and fortress that has served as a royal palace, prison, and even a zoo over the centuries. Visitors can explore its impressive collection of buildings and exhibitions, including the iconic White Tower, the Crown Jewels, and the medieval palace. They can also learn about the infamous prisoners who were held in the tower over the centuries, including Anne Boleyn and Guy Fawkes.
Visiting Westminster in London is a must-see for anyone interested in the city's rich history and iconic landmarks. Oxford is open to all learners aged 18–24. Cambridge is more advanced and requires at least two years of undergraduate study in a related subject.
