Art History Summer School at Oxford Summer Courses for ages 18-24 years. Study art history with Oxford Summer Courses. Study Art History with us, and you’ll learn the methods and meaning behind every brushstroke. We’ll analyse the techniques and symbolism of a range of artworks and interpret art from different cultural contexts. We'll cover important artistic movements through history, which could include the Renaissance, Impressionism, and Expressionism, as well as a range of artistic forms like painting, sculpture, mixed media, and architecture. From fine art to abstract works, clay heads and everything in between, absorb the rich creative history from the past to today’s modern masterpieces. From iconic gallery works to underground art, every canvas and artefact is a new discovery. Additionally, set and reflect on ambitious goals with our support, participate in tutorial Q&A sessions, and gain industry insights through discussions with experts. Teaching methodology
Learn the Oxford way with tutorial-style teaching. Your expert tutor will foster self-directed learning and critical thinking through interactive seminars in small groups (no bigger than 8). During your course, you will complete two pieces of independent work (essays or problem sheets), which your tutor will then evaluate in either a 1:1 or 2:1 tutorial. Tutorials will provide you with the opportunity to discuss your work and feedback with your tutor and learn new perspectives from your classmates. On completion of the course, you'll receive a certificate and letter of recommendation from your tutor.

The course is structured over two weeks, focusing on key art movements and theories.

Students are encouraged to do pre-course preparation to maximise their learning. Suggested resources include:
- Read John Berger’s Ways of Seeing, which challenges traditional interpretations of art history.
- Optional: Explore the history of Impressionism by reading selections from The History of Impressionism by John Rewald or Impressionism: Origins, Practice, Reception by Belinda Thomson.

The Tower of London is a historic castle and fortress that has served as a royal palace, prison, and even a zoo over the centuries. Nestled within the University of Oxford’s most iconic colleges, including Lady Margaret Hall, New College, Somerville College, and Worcester College, students will experience life at one of the world’s top universities. Accommodation will be assigned based on the tier selected during the application process.
