Learning
Outline
Politics is designed for 18–24-year-olds who are passionate about understanding the ever-evolving world of politics. Students will explore key political ideas, from iconic politicians throughout history to contemporary political issues. The course will cover essential topics such as democracy, national tensions, and the role of economics in shaping political landscapes. Students will dive into areas like the origins of social democracy, socialist feminism, and the representation of unheard voices in politics. Through a mix of current and historical debates, students will engage with political theory and sharpen their intellectual rigour, exploring the social and philosophical frameworks that underpin political ideologies. This course offers a unique opportunity to critically examine the forces that drive political change. We don’t follow a fixed curriculum—our tutors tailor the course to the group’s interests, making learning both engaging and relevant. The course also includes a masterclass on critical thinking, along with a reflection session to track progress and set new goals.
Teaching methodology
Learn the Oxford way with tutorial-style teaching. Your expert tutor will foster self-directed learning and critical thinking through interactive seminars in small groups (no bigger than 8). During your course, you will complete two pieces of independent work (essays or problem sheets), which your tutor will then evaluate in either a 1:1 or 2:1 tutorial. Tutorials will provide you with the opportunity to discuss your work and feedback with your tutor and learn new perspectives from your classmates. On completion of the course, you'll receive a certificate and letter of recommendation from your tutor.
The city of Oxford, with nearly 1,000 years of academic history, has educated prime ministers, presidents, and campaigners who have influenced politics across the globe. As part of the 18–24 Politics programme, you’ll live in a city shaped by debate, diplomacy, and decision-making. The city of Oxford provides an inspiring backdrop for learning, with its historic colleges, libraries, and long tradition of political thought and discussion.
Accommodation is in single or twin rooms, depending on the tier. Plus lets you choose single or twin; Superior guarantees an ensuite; and Premier provides concierge-selected rooms. All include shared spaces and on-course staff support.
Meals are provided on a half-board basis (breakfast and dinner), served in college dining halls or at selected local restaurants. Students arrange their own lunch. All dietary requirements are catered for.
The Oxford Summer Courses Experience
Politics shapes how societies make decisions, resolve conflict, and imagine the future. In Oxford, advanced learners explore political systems, governance, ideology, and global relations through debate and critical analysis. Students examine how power works in practice — from elections and public policy to international diplomacy — gaining deeper insight into the forces driving change in today’s world.
Tutorial-style learning in groups of no more than eight encourages rigorous discussion and independent thought. Students complete two written assignments supported by personalised, tutorial-style feedback that strengthens research, argumentation, and communication — key skills for academic and professional advancement. Combined with enrichment activities, culturally rich surroundings, and life within a college-style community, this experience builds confidence and clarity about future pathways in politics and related fields. All students leave with a certificate of completion and a tailored tutor recommendation to support their next steps.
