Outline
Sociology and Anthropology is designed for 16–17-year-olds who want to explore the complex social structures and cultural dynamics that shape human societies. Students will study topics such as human origins, globalization, sexuality, law and order, and social systems. They’ll develop critical thinking skills to understand how humans interact with each other and their environments, gaining insight into the factors that influence social behavior. We don’t follow a fixed curriculum—our tutors tailor the course to the group’s interests, making learning engaging and relevant. The course includes tutorial Q&A sessions, an academic skills masterclass, expert speakers, and visits to different Oxford colleges. Students will also have the opportunity to attend a university fair to explore future career pathways.
Teaching methodology
Learn the Oxford way with tutorial-style teaching. Your expert tutor will foster self-directed learning and critical thinking through interactive seminars in small groups (no bigger than 8). During your course, you will complete two pieces of independent work (essays or problem sheets), which your tutor will then evaluate in either a 1:1 or 2:1 tutorial. Tutorials will provide you with the opportunity to discuss your work and feedback with your tutor and learn new perspectives from your classmates. On completion of the course, you'll receive a certificate and letter of recommendation from your tutor.
The city of Oxford, with nearly 1,000 years of academic history, has been associated with the study of society and culture, from early explorations of human communities to modern research on global change. As part of the 16–17 Sociology and Anthropology programme, you’ll live in a city shaped by inquiry, debate, and new ideas. The city of Oxford provides an inspiring backdrop for learning, with its long tradition of examining how people live, interact, and shape the world around them.
Accommodation is in single or twin rooms, depending on the tier. Plus lets you choose single or twin; Superior guarantees an ensuite; Premier provides concierge-selected rooms. All include shared spaces and on-course staff support.
Meals are half-board (breakfast and dinner), served in college dining halls or selected local restaurants, with students arranging their own lunch. All dietary requirements are catered for.

Sociology and Anthropology explore what shapes people — from cultural traditions and family structures to identity, inequality, and global change. At Oxford, students live and learn in a historic college environment where conversations stretch beyond the seminar room. Surrounded by centuries of scholarly debate and some of the UK’s most fascinating museums, they work alongside peers from around the world to compare perspectives and understand how societies evolve.
Teaching takes place in small seminar groups (maximum 8 students) with expert tutors who encourage open-minded discussion and critical thinking. Students analyse case studies, examine human behaviour, and reflect on how culture influences the way we live and relate to others. Independent assignments are supported by personalised tutorials that strengthen communication and analytical skills. Every learner finishes the course with a certificate, a tutor recommendation letter, and a deeper curiosity about the social forces shaping our world today.
