Learning
Outline
Neuroscience Cambridge summer school at Oxford Summer Courses for ages 13-15 years. Study Neuroscience with Oxford Summer Courses. Unravel the marvels of the mind on our fascinating Neuroscience course. Explore the structure and potential of our brains from basic cell functions to how we think, feel, and act daily. Learn about the nervous system, how the brain impacts our behaviour and personalities, how our senses colour our experience of life, and the intensity of emotions. Learn where learning comes from. Explore how the human brain works and explore why, despite vast scientific progress, we’re still nowhere near tapping its full potential. Engage in a masterclass to acquire life skills like teamwork, debating, and collaboration through an interactive workshop led by on-course staff. Set and reflect on ambitious goals with the support of our staff and participate in a reflection session to review the goals set at the beginning of the Cambridge course and what you've learned so far.
Teaching methodology
Learning in a small group (no more than 8 students and often fewer) means that you get quality time with your teacher and ask as many questions as you like! Through interactive learning, our teachers will guide you through new concepts and assign you practice tasks to build your knowledge and skills. You will also have an opportunity for group work, independent research, and homework assignments to be discussed in class. Small classes mean everyone gets to have their say, and students learn from debating with one another, as well as from their tutor.

By the end of the course, students may:
- Gain an understanding of the brain's anatomy and its role in behavior and cognition.
- Explore key neuroscience concepts such as brain plasticity, localisation of brain function, and neurotransmission.
- Discuss important case studies, including the effects of brain trauma on personality.
- Build critical thinking skills by debating topics such as brain function and psychopathology.
Note: Learning objectives may vary based on student interests, which will be discussed during the admissions process.
Students are encouraged to do pre-course preparation to maximise their learning. Suggested resources include:

The Oxford Summer Courses experience
Get ready to explore the most complex system in the known universe — the human brain. On our Neuroscience course for ages 13–15, your child will begin to understand how the brain functions, from neurons and neural networks to memory, decision-making, and emotion. They'll learn how neuroscience intersects with psychology, biology, and medicine — and why it matters to our understanding of ourselves. With no fixed curriculum, students are encouraged to share their interests when they apply, and our expert tutors will adapt the course content to reflect those areas wherever possible.
With no more than 8 students per class (and often fewer), students benefit from personalised attention and space to ask questions, engage in deep discussions, and explore complex topics in a supportive environment. Lessons combine tutor-led teaching with group activities, independent research, and critical thinking tasks. Dedicated study sessions provide time for homework and self-guided exploration, with on-course staff available to support their progress.
Outside the classroom, students enjoy a full summer school programme — including games, social events, city excursions, and a graduation ceremony and disco. It’s a summer full of discovery, connection, and inspiration.
