Learning

Outline

Medicine is designed for 16–17-year-olds interested in understanding how genetics and lifestyle intersect to shape health and disease. Students will explore a broad range of topics, from human diseases and developmental biology to stem cells and regenerative medicine. Through a combination of theory and hands-on study, they will gain a deep understanding of cell biology and its connection to the human body, providing them with a foundational knowledge of modern medicine. The course will also look at how understanding normal bodily functions is crucial for tackling diseases and how ongoing research is pushing the boundaries of medical treatment. We don’t follow a fixed curriculum—our tutors tailor the course to the group’s interests, making the learning experience both engaging and relevant. The course also includes a masterclass on critical thinking and collaboration, along with a reflection session to track progress and set new goals.

Teaching methodology

Learn the Oxford way with tutorial-style teaching. Your expert tutor will foster self-directed learning and critical thinking through interactive seminars in small groups (no bigger than 8). During your course, you will complete two pieces of independent work (essays or problem sheets), which your tutor will then evaluate in either a 1:1 or 2:1 tutorial. Tutorials will provide you with the opportunity to discuss your work and feedback with your tutor and learn new perspectives from your classmates. On completion of the course, you'll receive a certificate and letter of recommendation from your tutor.

The Oxford Summer Courses Experience

Medicine is a subject driven by curiosity, compassion, and the determination to improve lives. In Cambridge, students dive into the science behind the human body and the challenges faced by modern healthcare. Guided by expert tutors and surrounded by the city’s legacy of scientific breakthroughs, they work with peers from around the world to examine disease, diagnosis, and innovation in medicine — developing confidence in their ideas and a clearer picture of life in healthcare.

Learning takes place in small seminars (maximum 8 students), where discussions are collaborative, challenging, and tailored to each group’s interests. Students complete independent assignments with personalised feedback in supportive tutorials that strengthen communication and analytical thinking — key skills for future study. Alongside subject learning, social activities and excursions offer the chance to connect with others and explore a world-leading academic city. They return home with a certificate, a recommendation letter, and a strengthened belief in their ability to make a difference.
