Learning
Outline
Environmental Science is designed for 18–24-year-olds who are passionate about tackling the world’s most pressing environmental challenges. Students will explore a wide range of environmental topics, from the scientific study of interactions between physical, chemical, and biological processes to key issues like pollution, conservation, and natural resource management. The course will also cover critical areas such as sustainability, climate change, and environmental justice, equipping students with the skills to address these challenges effectively. We don’t follow a fixed curriculum—our tutors tailor the course to the group’s interests, making learning both engaging and relevant. The course also includes a masterclass on critical thinking, along with a reflection session to track progress and set new goals.
Teaching methodology
Learn the Oxford way with tutorial-style teaching. Your expert tutor will foster self-directed learning and critical thinking through interactive seminars in small groups (no bigger than 8). During your course, you will complete two pieces of independent work (essays or problem sheets), which your tutor will then evaluate in either a 1:1 or 2:1 tutorial. Tutorials will provide you with the opportunity to discuss your work and feedback with your tutor and learn new perspectives from your classmates. On completion of the course, you'll receive a certificate and letter of recommendation from your tutor.
The city of Oxford, with nearly 1,000 years of academic history, has long been associated with research and debate on the natural world, from early studies of ecosystems to modern discussions of climate change. As part of the 18–24 Environmental Science programme, you’ll live in a city that blends scholarship with green spaces and riverside settings. The city of Oxford provides an inspiring backdrop for learning, with its museums, historic colleges, and long tradition of exploring how humans interact with the environment.
Accommodation is in single or twin rooms, depending on the tier. Plus lets you choose single or twin; Superior guarantees an ensuite; and Premier provides concierge-selected rooms. All include shared spaces and on-course staff support.
Meals are provided on a half-board basis (breakfast and dinner), served in college dining halls or at selected local restaurants. Students arrange their own lunch. All dietary requirements are catered for.
The Oxford Summer Courses Experience
Environmental science brings together biology, chemistry, geography, and policy to understand and protect the natural world. In Oxford, students explore urgent environmental questions — from biodiversity loss to climate change and sustainable resource use — while analysing evidence behind real solutions. Discussions and case studies help learners see how research, innovation, and community action can create meaningful environmental change.
Tutorial-style learning with a maximum of eight students ensures everyone can contribute ideas and debate different perspectives. Two independent assignments receive personalised tutor feedback that strengthens scientific reasoning and communication — essential for future study. Alongside enrichment activities, life in a college-style setting, and a diverse international cohort, students build confidence and clarity about environmental pathways ahead. Each participant leaves with a certificate of completion, a personalised tutor recommendation, and greater motivation to help shape a sustainable future.
