Outline
Environmental Science is an advanced course designed for 18–24-year-olds passionate about understanding the complex relationships between physical, chemical, and biological processes in our environment. Students will explore pressing topics such as environmental pollution, conservation, and natural resource management, as well as key global challenges like sustainability, climate change, and environmental justice. Through in-depth study and discussions, you will develop the necessary skills to address these issues and contribute to solutions that promote a sustainable future. We don’t follow a fixed curriculum—our tutors tailor the course to the group’s interests, ensuring a personalised and relevant learning experience. The course also includes a masterclass on environmental research and critical thinking, along with a reflection session to track progress and set new goals.
Teaching methodology
Learn the Oxford way with tutorial-style teaching. Your expert tutor will foster self-directed learning and critical thinking through interactive seminars in small groups (no bigger than 8). During your course, you will complete two pieces of independent work (essays or problem sheets), which your tutor will then evaluate in either a 1:1 or 2:1 tutorial. Tutorials will provide you with the opportunity to discuss your work and feedback with your tutor and learn new perspectives from your classmates. On completion of the course, you'll receive a certificate and letter of recommendation from your tutor.
The city of Cambridge, with more than 800 years of academic tradition, has been at the forefront of environmental research and discovery—from pioneering studies in ecology to modern advances in climate science and sustainability. As part of the 18–24 Environmental Science (Advanced) programme, you’ll live in a city shaped by inquiry and innovation. The city of Cambridge provides an inspiring backdrop for learning, with its historic colleges, world-class museums, and a long tradition of exploring solutions to global environmental challenges.
Accommodation is in single or twin rooms, depending on the tier. Superior guarantees an ensuite; and Premier provides concierge-selected rooms. All include shared spaces and on-course staff support.
Meals are provided on a half-board basis (breakfast and dinner), served in college dining halls or at selected local restaurants. Students arrange their own lunch. All dietary requirements are catered for.

Environmental science examines how natural systems function — and how we can protect them in a rapidly changing world. In Cambridge, students explore climate science, ecosystems, sustainability, and environmental policy through scientific analysis and contemporary case studies. Discussions connect research to real-world solutions, from conservation strategies to renewable energy innovations, helping learners understand how environmental progress is made.
This advanced-level course is designed for those who have completed at least two years of undergraduate study (or equivalent) in a related field. Tutorials are capped at eight participants, ensuring personalised academic guidance and space to test ideas through debate. Two independent assignments receive detailed tutor feedback that strengthens scientific communication and critical thinking. Alongside enrichment activities, life in a college-style setting, and a diverse international community, students gain confidence in their academic direction. Each participant leaves with a certificate of completion, a personalised tutor recommendation, and greater motivation to help shape a more sustainable future.

At Oxford Summer Courses, we understand that students aged 18-24 have different needs in terms of safeguarding. All staff are enhanced DBS-checked and trained in safeguarding policies. We maintain 24/7 on-site security, but with more independence allowed for this age group. Our policies are focused on ensuring safety while encouraging personal responsibility and autonomy.
Since spaces are limited, once a course is full, we are unable to accept additional students. We recommend applying early to avoid disappointment.
