Learning
Outline
Classical Civilisation is designed for 18–24-year-olds who are passionate about ancient history and the foundations of modern society. Students will immerse themselves in the world of the Greeks and Romans, studying the political, social, and cultural aspects of their lives. The course covers a wide range of topics, including major historical events, philosophical thought, and the significance of classical literature from figures like Thucydides and Socrates. Students will also explore the art, architecture, and daily life of ancient civilizations, while enhancing their Latin language skills. This course offers a unique opportunity to understand the lasting impact of ancient Greece and Rome on the modern world. We don’t follow a fixed curriculum—our tutors tailor the course to the group’s interests, ensuring that each lesson is engaging and relevant. The course also includes a masterclass on historical analysis, along with a reflection session to track progress and set new goals.
Teaching methodology
Learn the Oxford way with tutorial-style teaching. Your expert tutor will foster self-directed learning and critical thinking through interactive seminars in small groups (no bigger than 8). During your course, you will complete two pieces of independent work (essays or problem sheets), which your tutor will then evaluate in either a 1:1 or 2:1 tutorial. Tutorials will provide you with the opportunity to discuss your work and feedback with your tutor and learn new perspectives from your classmates. On completion of the course, you'll receive a certificate and letter of recommendation from your tutor.
The city of Oxford, with nearly 1,000 years of academic history, has long been a centre for the study of the ancient world—from philosophy and literature to art and archaeology. As part of the 18–24 Classical Civilisation programme, you’ll live in a city shaped by centuries of scholarship and debate. The city of Oxford provides an inspiring backdrop for learning, with its historic colleges, libraries, and a tradition of exploring ideas that have influenced civilisation for millennia.
Accommodation is in single or twin rooms, depending on the tier. Plus lets you choose single or twin; Superior guarantees an ensuite; and Premier provides concierge-selected rooms. All include shared spaces and on-course staff support.
Meals are provided on a half-board basis (breakfast and dinner), served in college dining halls or at selected local restaurants. Students arrange their own lunch. All dietary requirements are catered for.
The Oxford Summer Courses Experience
Classical civilisation invites students to explore the ancient world — from epic myths and philosophical ideas to politics, art, and religion. In Oxford, learners examine the societies of Greece and Rome through close reading of historical sources and discussion of the beliefs and values that shaped Western thought. They discover how ancient ideas continue to influence modern culture, justice, and identity.
Tutorial-style learning in groups of no more than eight encourages lively debate, thoughtful interpretation, and confidence in developing personal viewpoints. Two independent assignments receive personalised tutor feedback that sharpens academic writing and analytical skills, essential for humanities study at a higher level. With enrichment activities, supportive college-style living, and a global cohort of peers, students gain a deeper appreciation of the classical world and its modern relevance. They finish with a certificate of completion, a tailored tutor recommendation, and renewed curiosity for history and ideas.
