Uncover Stories. Question the Past.

History isn’t just about what happened — it’s about why it happened, and what it means for us today. Our History Scholars programme invites students aged 12–14 to explore the past through storytelling, discussion, and discovery. At Oxford Summer Courses, history comes alive through ideas, voices, and perspectives — showing that every story has more than one side. Students will dive into fascinating periods of human history, from ancient civilisations to modern revolutions, guided by expert tutors who make the past feel relevant and alive. Through debate, research, and creative projects, they’ll learn how to think like historians — questioning evidence, recognising bias, and connecting historical moments to the world around them.

Explore How the Past Shapes the Present

History helps us understand who we are, where we’ve come from, and how societies change over time. In this course, students will explore major events, ideas, and movements that shaped the world — from leadership and invention to conflict and cooperation. Each lesson encourages students to ask their own questions and form their own opinions. They’ll examine how people throughout history faced challenges, made decisions, and shaped the future. By analysing different sources and viewpoints, students develop the critical thinking skills needed to see the past — and the present — with curiosity and clarity.

Learning That Brings History to Life

Our 12–14 courses use interactive and task-based learning to turn history into hands-on exploration. Students work together on projects, debates, and creative challenges that bring key moments to life. They might recreate historical debates, design museum exhibits, or imagine how life looked and felt during key turning points in history. Small class sizes create a supportive environment where every student can contribute ideas and share insights. Tutors adapt the lessons to the group’s interests — whether they’re drawn to ancient cultures, world wars, or social movements — ensuring learning feels personal, engaging, and inspiring.

Inspired by Oxford and Cambridge Traditions

At Oxford Summer Courses, we take inspiration from the Oxford and Cambridge tutorial style — where learning happens through questioning, discussion, and reflection. Our tutors encourage students to think independently, analyse evidence critically, and explore new perspectives with confidence. Instead of simply learning what historians have said, students learn how to think like historians themselves. Every discussion is an invitation to interpret, challenge, and connect — transforming the study of history into a living conversation that continues long after the course ends.

Beyond the Classroom

History doesn’t belong just in books — it’s everywhere. Students explore how historical ideas shape art, politics, culture, and science. Through excursions and group activities, they’ll see history in the architecture, museums, and traditions around them, discovering that the past is woven into every part of the present. These shared experiences bring context and meaning to classroom learning, helping students develop empathy, curiosity, and perspective. By the end of the course, they’ll see that understanding history isn’t just about knowing what happened — it’s about asking why it matters.
