Learning
Outline
English Literature is designed for 18–24-year-olds who are passionate about exploring the depths of human expression through literature. Students will immerse themselves in the finest works of English literature, from Shakespeare’s timeless plays to modern-day masterpieces. The course will cover themes such as love, tragedy, and the human condition, analysing key works in their social and cultural context. By critically engaging with texts from different periods, students will develop a deeper understanding of how literature reflects and shapes society. We don’t follow a fixed curriculum—our tutors tailor the course to the group’s interests, making learning both engaging and relevant. The course also includes a masterclass on critical thinking, along with a reflection session to track progress and set new goals.
Teaching methodology
Learn the Oxford way with tutorial-style teaching. Your expert tutor will foster self-directed learning and critical thinking through interactive seminars in small groups (no bigger than 8). During your course, you will complete two pieces of independent work (essays or problem sheets), which your tutor will then evaluate in either a 1:1 or 2:1 tutorial. Tutorials will provide you with the opportunity to discuss your work and feedback with your tutor and learn new perspectives from your classmates. On completion of the course, you'll receive a certificate and letter of recommendation from your tutor.
The city of Oxford, with nearly 1,000 years of academic history, has inspired generations of writers and scholars—from J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis to contemporary authors who found creativity in its libraries and streets. As part of the 18–24 English Literature programme, you’ll live in a city where literature and learning are deeply connected. The city of Oxford provides an inspiring backdrop for study, with its historic colleges, world-class libraries, and long tradition of storytelling and scholarship.
Accommodation is in single or twin rooms, depending on the tier. Plus lets you choose single or twin; Superior guarantees an ensuite; and Premier provides concierge-selected rooms. All include shared spaces and on-course staff support.
Meals are provided on a half-board basis (breakfast and dinner), served in college dining halls or at selected local restaurants. Students arrange their own lunch. All dietary requirements are catered for.
The Oxford Summer Courses Experience
English Literature invites students to explore stories, language, and voices that have shaped culture across centuries. In Oxford, learners dive into poetry, drama, and prose from diverse writers and periods, analysing how literature responds to — and challenges — the world around it. Through discussion and interpretation, they develop their own perspective on themes like identity, power, and human experience, discovering how great writing continues to resonate today.
Tutorial-style learning with no more than eight students encourages lively debate and thoughtful analysis. Two independent assignments receive personalised tutor feedback that sharpens essay structure, textual interpretation, and academic confidence. With cultural enrichment, supportive college-style living, and peers from around the world, students experience literature both in the seminar room and in the historic streets that have inspired authors for generations. They leave with a certificate of completion, a tailored tutor recommendation, and a deeper passion for the written word.
