Learning
Outline
Natural Sciences is designed for 13–15-year-olds who want to explore how the principles of physics, chemistry, and biology come together to explain the world around us. Students will learn how these core concepts apply to modern fields like nanotechnology, materials science, and biochemistry, while gaining insight into how scientific breakthroughs happen across disciplines. They’ll develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills as they explore the connections between different areas of science. We don’t follow a fixed curriculum—our tutors tailor the course to the group’s interests, making learning both engaging and relevant. The course also includes a masterclass on teamwork and collaboration, along with a reflection session to help students track their goals and progress.
Teaching methodology
Learning in a small group (no more than 8 students and often fewer) means that you get quality time with your teacher and ask as many questions as you like! Through interactive learning, our teachers will guide you through new concepts and assign you practice tasks to build your knowledge and skills. You will also have an opportunity for group work, independent research, and homework assignments to be discussed in class. Small classes mean everyone gets to have their say, and students learn from debating with one another, as well as from their tutor.
The city of Cambridge, with more than 800 years of academic tradition, has been at the forefront of discoveries across the natural sciences—from Darwin’s theory of evolution to groundbreaking advances in chemistry and physics. As part of the 13–15 Natural Sciences programme, your child will live in a city shaped by curiosity and exploration. The city of Cambridge provides an inspiring backdrop for learning, with its historic colleges, renowned museums, and a tradition of scientific inquiry that continues to deepen our understanding of the natural world.
Accommodation is available in single or twin rooms, depending on the tier chosen. Plus students can choose single or twin, Superior guarantees an ensuite, and Premier provides concierge-selected rooms. All options include shared spaces and on-course staff for support.
Meals are provided on a full-board basis, with breakfast, lunch, and dinner included. Students eat in the college dining hall or at local restaurants. All dietary requirements are catered for.
The Oxford Summer Courses Experience
Natural Sciences helps students explore the world from every angle — from the chemistry of reactions to the biology of living systems and the physics behind movement and energy. On this course, curious learners get hands-on with scientific investigation, experimenting, questioning, and debating how science explains the world around us. It’s an exciting way to grow confidence in thinking like a scientist — observing clearly, analysing deeply, and never being afraid to ask why.
Each weekday includes small, discussion-led seminars (maximum 8 students) where learners explore core scientific ideas through practical tasks and collaborative problem-solving. Afternoons combine directed study, masterclasses, and science-linked excursions, helping students apply new knowledge beyond the classroom — whether investigating nature up close or analysing data in real-world environments. With structured evening socials, round-the-clock support, and Cambridge’s inspiring academic setting, students build independence and communication skills while strengthening their scientific understanding in memorable, meaningful ways.
