Learning
Outline
Mechanical Engineering is designed for 18–24-year-olds with a passion for the design and mechanics that shape the world around us. Students will explore the core principles of mechanical engineering, delving into key topics such as aerodynamics, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, mechatronics, structures, materials, and Computer-Aided Design (CAD). Through both solo and collaborative projects, students will apply mathematical and physical principles to solve engineering challenges and design innovative solutions. The course covers the full spectrum of mechanical engineering, from small-scale components like printer heads to large-scale projects such as spacecraft. Students will acquire industry-relevant skills and gain experience in designing everything from engines to generators. We don’t follow a fixed curriculum—our tutors tailor the course to the group’s interests, ensuring that learning is both engaging and applicable. The course also includes a masterclass on critical thinking, along with a reflection session to track progress and set new goals.
Teaching methodology
Learn the Oxford way with tutorial-style teaching. Your expert tutor will foster self-directed learning and critical thinking through interactive seminars in small groups (no bigger than 8). During your course, you will complete two pieces of independent work (essays or problem sheets), which your tutor will then evaluate in either a 1:1 or 2:1 tutorial. Tutorials will provide you with the opportunity to discuss your work and feedback with your tutor and learn new perspectives from your classmates. On completion of the course, you'll receive a certificate and letter of recommendation from your tutor.
The city of Oxford, with nearly 1,000 years of academic history, has long been associated with innovation in science and engineering, from early developments in mechanics to modern technological advances. As part of the 18–24 Mechanical Engineering programme, you’ll live in a city shaped by problem-solving and design. The city of Oxford provides an inspiring backdrop for learning, with its historic setting, renowned museums, and long tradition of exploring how engineering drives progress.
Accommodation is in single or twin rooms, depending on the tier. Plus lets you choose single or twin; Superior guarantees an ensuite; and Premier provides concierge-selected rooms. All include shared spaces and on-course staff support.
Meals are provided on a half-board basis (breakfast and dinner), served in college dining halls or at selected local restaurants. Students arrange their own lunch. All dietary requirements are catered for.
The Oxford Summer Courses Experience
Mechanical engineering is all about designing systems that move the world — from sustainable transport and robotics to aerospace and advanced manufacturing. In Oxford, students explore the principles behind motion, energy, forces, and materials, discovering how engineers turn theory into technology that improves everyday life. Through analysis and practical challenges, they learn to think like innovators — curious, creative, and ready to problem-solve.
Tutorial-style lessons with a maximum of eight students ensure every learner can participate actively and test their understanding in real time. Two independent assignments are guided by personalised, tutorial-style feedback that strengthens technical reasoning and communication. With enrichment activities, supportive college-style living, and a global network of peers, the course builds strong preparation for future study or careers in engineering. Students leave with a completion certificate, a tailored tutor recommendation, and greater confidence in where engineering could take them next.
