Learning
Outline
Computer Science is designed for 16–17-year-olds who want to understand the programming languages shaping the digital world. Students will explore programming principles and how they structure our world, learning to critically analyse the role of code in shaping how we think and interact with technology. We don’t follow a fixed curriculum—our tutors tailor the course to the group’s interests, making learning engaging and relevant. The course encourages independent thinking, and students may be invited to work on their own projects, testing their skills and creativity. The course includes tutorial Q&A sessions, an academic skills masterclass, expert speakers, and visits to different Oxford colleges. Students will also have the opportunity to attend a university fair to explore future career pathways.
Teaching methodology
Learn the Oxford way with tutorial-style teaching. Your expert tutor will foster self-directed learning and critical thinking through interactive seminars in small groups (no bigger than 8). During your course, you will complete two pieces of independent work (essays or problem sheets), which your tutor will then evaluate in either a 1:1 or 2:1 tutorial. Tutorials will provide you with the opportunity to discuss your work and feedback with your tutor and learn new perspectives from your classmates. On completion of the course, you'll receive a certificate and letter of recommendation from your tutor.
The city of Oxford, with nearly 1,000 years of academic history, has been associated with innovation in mathematics, logic, and computing — ideas that continue to shape technology today. As part of the 16–17 Computer Science programme, you’ll live in a city known for discovery, creativity, and problem-solving. The city of Oxford provides an inspiring backdrop for learning, with its long tradition of exploring how we use technology to understand and change the world.
Accommodation is in single or twin rooms, depending on the tier. Plus lets you choose single or twin; Superior guarantees an ensuite; Premier provides concierge-selected rooms. All include shared spaces and on-course staff support.
Meals are half-board (breakfast and dinner), served in college dining halls or selected local restaurants, with students arranging their own lunch. All dietary requirements are catered for.
The Oxford Summer Courses Experience
Technology shapes everything — from how we learn and communicate to how we solve the world’s biggest challenges. In Oxford, students explore the foundations of computer science through programming, logic, and real-world applications. They investigate topics such as algorithms, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and data-driven problem-solving, gaining insight into how computer science drives innovation globally.
Seminar-style lessons with no more than eight students ensure plenty of hands-on practice and discussion. Independent coding tasks and technical challenges are supported through personalised, tutorial-style feedback that helps students improve both their reasoning and their results. Living in an Oxford college setting, taking part in enrichment activities, and collaborating with peers from around the world make learning both exciting and relevant beyond the classroom. Every student finishes with a certificate of completion, a personalised tutor recommendation, and a stronger foundation for future study in computing and technology.
