Learning
Outline
Biotechnology and Genetics is an advanced course designed for 18–24-year-olds who are passionate about the rapidly evolving fields of biotechnology and genetics. Students will explore the profound impact these disciplines have on modern science and everyday life. The course will delve into genetic engineering, current breakthroughs, and future developments in biotechnology, providing students with both theoretical knowledge and practical applications. Whether studying independently or working with top academics, you’ll gain in-depth insights into cutting-edge research and the potential future of genetics and biotechnology. Our expert tutors will guide you through complex topics, preparing you for further academic study or a career in the rapidly developing field. We don’t follow a fixed curriculum—our tutors tailor the course to the group’s interests, making learning both engaging and relevant. The course also includes a masterclass on research techniques and critical thinking, along with a reflection session to track progress and set new goals.
Teaching methodology
Learn the Oxford way with tutorial-style teaching. Your expert tutor will foster self-directed learning and critical thinking through interactive seminars in small groups (no bigger than 8). During your course, you will complete two pieces of independent work (essays or problem sheets), which your tutor will then evaluate in either a 1:1 or 2:1 tutorial. Tutorials will provide you with the opportunity to discuss your work and feedback with your tutor and learn new perspectives from your classmates. On completion of the course, you'll receive a certificate and letter of recommendation from your tutor.
The city of Cambridge, with over 800 years of academic tradition, has been central to advances in biology—from the discovery of DNA’s double-helix structure by Watson and Crick to pioneering research in genetics, biotechnology, and molecular medicine. As part of the 18–24 Biotechnology and Genetics (Advanced) programme, you’ll live in a city shaped by scientific breakthroughs that continue to transform healthcare and technology. The city of Cambridge provides an inspiring backdrop for learning, with its historic colleges, world-class laboratories, and a tradition of innovation at the cutting edge of biological science.
Accommodation is in single or twin rooms, depending on the tier. Superior guarantees an ensuite; and Premier provides concierge-selected rooms. All include shared spaces and on-course staff support.
Meals are provided on a half-board basis (breakfast and dinner), served in college dining halls or at selected local restaurants. Students arrange their own lunch. All dietary requirements are catered for.
The Oxford Summer Courses Experience
Biotechnology and genetics sit at the forefront of scientific innovation — from gene therapy and personalised medicine to food sustainability and environmental protection. In Cambridge, students explore how researchers decode, edit, and apply genetic information to solve global challenges. Discussions and case studies help them understand the real-world impact of breakthroughs in molecular biology, ethics, and emerging biotechnologies.
This advanced-level course is designed for students who have completed at least two years of undergraduate study (or equivalent) in a relevant field. Tutorials are capped at eight participants to ensure rigorous, collaborative learning. Two independent assignments receive personalised tutor feedback that sharpens scientific writing, data interpretation, and academic communication — key preparation for future research or medical pathways. With enrichment activities, college-style living, and a diverse international cohort, students leave with a completion certificate, a tailored tutor recommendation, and confidence in where biotechnology and genetics can lead them next.
