Learning
Outline
Psychology is designed for 18–24-year-olds who are eager to deepen their understanding of the mind and explore the latest developments in psychology. Students will move beyond the core concepts to examine significant areas such as the brain’s impact on emotions, the relationship between language and thought, and the ethical considerations in psychological research. The course will delve into specialisms like psychopathology, examining the causes, classification, and treatments available for mental health disorders. Students will explore the latest breakthroughs in neuroanatomy and theories of behaviour, gaining a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental principles shaping modern psychology. This course provides a unique opportunity to engage with advanced psychological concepts and real-world applications. We don’t follow a fixed curriculum—our tutors tailor the course to the group’s interests, making learning both engaging and relevant. The course also includes a masterclass on critical thinking, along with a reflection session to track progress and set new goals.
Teaching methodology
Learn the Oxford way with tutorial-style teaching. Your expert tutor will foster self-directed learning and critical thinking through interactive seminars in small groups (no bigger than 8). During your course, you will complete two pieces of independent work (essays or problem sheets), which your tutor will then evaluate in either a 1:1 or 2:1 tutorial. Tutorials will provide you with the opportunity to discuss your work and feedback with your tutor and learn new perspectives from your classmates. On completion of the course, you'll receive a certificate and letter of recommendation from your tutor.
The city of Oxford, with nearly 1,000 years of academic history, has played a key role in advancing the study of the mind, from early work in experimental psychology to modern research into behaviour and cognition. As part of the 18–24 Psychology programme, you’ll live in a city known for inquiry and discovery. The city of Oxford provides an inspiring backdrop for learning, with its renowned museums, libraries, and long tradition of exploring how people think and behave.
Accommodation is in single or twin rooms, depending on the tier. Plus lets you choose single or twin; Superior guarantees an ensuite; and Premier provides concierge-selected rooms. All include shared spaces and on-course staff support.
Meals are provided on a half-board basis (breakfast and dinner), served in college dining halls or at selected local restaurants. Students arrange their own lunch. All dietary requirements are catered for.
The Oxford Summer Courses Experience
Psychology explores why we think, feel, and behave the way we do. In Oxford, advanced learners investigate the scientific foundations of the mind — from cognition and neuropsychology to behaviour, emotion, and mental health. Through case studies, research evaluation, and ethical debate, students examine how psychological theories apply to real human experiences and modern challenges such as wellbeing, technology, and social influence.
Tutorial groups are kept to a maximum of eight students, encouraging meaningful discussion and confident communication. Two independent assignments — guided by personalised, tutorial-style feedback — help develop strong academic writing, critical analysis, and evidence-based reasoning. Alongside social activities, college-style living, and an international network of peers, students gain the independence and insight needed for future study in psychology or related fields. Each participant receives a completion certificate and a tailored tutor recommendation to support their onward applications and ambitions.
