Learning
Outline
Creative Writing is designed for 16–17-year-olds who want to master the craft of writing engaging fiction, prose, and poetry. Students will learn the methods and structures behind creative writing, exploring character development, plot, voice, and dialogue. They’ll discover the origins of creative writing, why we write, and how to craft compelling opening chapters. We don’t follow a fixed curriculum—our tutors tailor the course to the group’s interests, making learning engaging and relevant. The course includes tutorial Q&A sessions, an academic skills masterclass, expert speakers, and visits to different Oxford colleges. Students will also have the opportunity to attend a university fair to explore future career pathways.
Teaching methodology
Learn the Oxford way with tutorial-style teaching. Your expert tutor will foster self-directed learning and critical thinking through interactive seminars in small groups (no bigger than 8). During your course, you will complete two pieces of independent work (essays or problem sheets), which your tutor will then evaluate in either a 1:1 or 2:1 tutorial. Tutorials will provide you with the opportunity to discuss your work and feedback with your tutor and learn new perspectives from your classmates. On completion of the course, you'll receive a certificate and letter of recommendation from your tutor.
The city of Oxford, with nearly 1,000 years of academic history, has inspired generations of writers, from Lewis Carroll and Oscar Wilde to more recent voices like Philip Pullman. As part of the 16–17 Creative Writing programme, you’ll live in a city shaped by imagination, storytelling, and ideas. The city of Oxford provides an inspiring backdrop for learning, with its literary landmarks, historic libraries, and long tradition of creativity that continues to influence writers today.
Accommodation is in single or twin rooms, depending on the tier. Plus lets you choose single or twin; Superior guarantees an ensuite; Premier provides concierge-selected rooms. All include shared spaces and on-course staff support.
Meals are half-board (breakfast and dinner), served in college dining halls or selected local restaurants, with students arranging their own lunch. All dietary requirements are catered for.
The Oxford Summer Courses Experience
Oxford has inspired generations of storytellers — and now it’s your turn to create. In this course, students explore fiction, poetry, and narrative craft, experimenting with voice, character, and structure while learning from celebrated literary traditions. Workshops, readings, and collaborative exercises build confidence to express ideas creatively and refine a personal writing style.
Lessons take place in seminar groups of no more than eight students, ensuring everyone receives thoughtful feedback and space to share their work. Tutorial-style sessions help writers strengthen their technique and produce polished pieces they can be proud of. Living and learning in an Oxford college setting, paired with cultural visits and evenings spent with peers from around the world, fuels imagination beyond the classroom. Students leave with a certificate of completion, a personalised tutor recommendation, and a renewed belief in the power of their own writing.
