Oxford vs Cambridge: Choosing Your Perfect Fit

Oxford and Cambridge are two of the world’s most prestigious universities, and for many students choosing between them is a major decision. They share ancient traditions, collegiate structures and rigorous admissions processes, but there are notable differences.

City and atmosphere

Oxford is larger and busier than Cambridge, with a population of around 150 000 compared to Cambridge’s 124 000.  Oxford Royale points out that Cambridge can feel quieter and more compact . If you prefer a lively city with bustling cafés, Oxford might suit you. If a smaller, cycle‑friendly environment appeals, Cambridge could be the better choice.

Courses offered

Both universities offer most subjects, but there are exceptions. Cambridge offers Architecture and a broad Natural Sciences course, while Oxford offers Fine Art (through the Ruskin School of Art) and a joint Honours degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE). When making your decision, check which university provides your desired course structure.

Teaching style

Both universities use a tutorial/supervision system: students meet regularly with a tutor in small groups to discuss essays or problem sheets. However, Cambridge typically has more contact hours in science subjects, while Oxford’s humanities courses often require greater self‑directed reading. For example, the first‑year English course at Oxford covers literature from 650 onwards, whereas Cambridge’s covers the period 1300–1550 and Shakespeare. Consider which approach aligns with your learning style.

Tradition and culture

Oxford is sometimes considered more traditional, with formal ceremonies and Latin grace.  Cambridge, while still steeped in history, is viewed as slightly more laid‑back . Both universities have strong rowing and punting traditions. The social scene at Oxford may include more nightlife, whereas Cambridge students often socialise in college bars or cafés.

College choice

Both universities consist of a number of colleges, each with its own character. College choice can impact your experience more than the city itself. Some colleges are known for certain subjects, others for being more relaxed or more formal. Visit open days (in person or virtual) to see which college feels like home.

How Oxford Summer Courses bridges the gap

At OxSC, we deliver the best of both worlds. Our courses take place in Oxford and Cambridge colleges, giving students an authentic taste of each city’s academic life. You’ll experience tutorials with expert tutors who often studied at these universities. Our small classes and one‑to‑one teaching mirror the tutorial/supervision system, helping you decide which style suits you. By attending an OxSC course, you can explore both cities, talk to current undergraduates and ask questions about admissions. It’s the perfect way to inform your decision before applying to either university.
