Learning
Outline
History is designed for 13–15-year-olds who want to explore key moments in history and understand how the past shapes the present. Students will learn how to interpret historical sources, conduct research, and draw conclusions based on evidence. They’ll study a range of periods and figures, from Ancient Greece to the Renaissance to World War I, developing critical thinking and analytical skills along the way. We don’t follow a fixed curriculum—our tutors tailor the course to the group’s interests, making learning engaging, relevant, and thought-provoking. The course also includes a masterclass on teamwork and debating, along with a reflection session to help students review their progress and goals.
Teaching methodology
Learning in a small group (no more than 8 students and often fewer) means that you get quality time with your teacher and ask as many questions as you like! Through interactive learning, our teachers will guide you through new concepts and assign you practice tasks to build your knowledge and skills. You will also have an opportunity for group work, independent research, and homework assignments to be discussed in class. Small classes mean everyone gets to have their say, and students learn from debating with one another, as well as from their tutor.
The city of Oxford, with nearly 1,000 years of academic history, is a place where the past is always present — from medieval colleges and libraries to landmarks that have stood for centuries. As part of the 13–15 History programme, your child will live in a city shaped by its heritage and traditions of learning. The city of Oxford provides an inspiring backdrop for discovery, with historic streets, renowned museums, and a culture of scholarship that continues to spark curiosity about the events and ideas that shaped our world.
Accommodation is in single or twin rooms, depending on the tier chosen. Classic students are assigned a room, Plus students can choose single or twin, Superior guarantees an ensuite, and Premier provides concierge-selected rooms. All options include shared spaces and on-course staff for support.
Meals are provided on a full-board basis, with breakfast, lunch, and dinner included. Students eat in the college dining hall or at local restaurants. All dietary requirements are catered for.
The Oxford Summer Courses Experience
Get ready to uncover the stories that shaped the world. On our History course for ages 13–15, your child will explore major events, influential figures, and powerful ideas from the past — all while developing the skills to think critically, analyse sources, and form their own interpretations. Whether they’re interested in ancient civilisations, revolutions, or global conflicts, there’s room to explore. With no fixed curriculum, students are encouraged to share their interests when they apply, and our expert tutors will tailor the course to reflect those passions wherever possible.
With class sizes of no more than 8 students (and often fewer), your child will receive personalised guidance and be encouraged to take part in thought-provoking discussions and debates. Sessions are interactive and dynamic — blending tutor-led teaching with group tasks, research challenges, and reflective activities. Directed study sessions provide dedicated time for assignments and deeper exploration, supported by on-course staff.
Beyond the classroom, the course is brought to life through a full social programme — including city excursions, themed events, and a final graduation ceremony and disco. It’s a summer full of discovery, perspective, and connection.
