Moving on from the basics of psychology, we’ll explore beyond the core concepts and take an in-depth look at the most significant areas of the mind. Study Psychology with us and explore key ideas like how the brain affects emotions, the relationship between language and thought and how to carry out ethical research. We’ll also introduce specialisms such as psychopathology and the causes, classification, and treatments available.

Teaching methodology

Learn the Oxford way with tutorial-style teaching. Your expert tutor will foster self-directed learning and critical thinking through interactive seminars in small groups (no bigger than 8). During your course, you will complete two pieces of independent work (essays or problem sheets), which your tutor will then evaluate in either a 1:1 or 2:1 tutorial. Tutorials will provide you with the opportunity to discuss your work and feedback with your tutor and learn new perspectives from your classmates. On completion of the course, you'll receive a certificate and letter of recommendation from your tutor.

Dr Gillian R

PhD Biological Anthropology and Psychiatry, University of Cambridge - Gill's particular areas of interest are social cognition and neuroscience, epigenetic regulation of mental processes, mental health and evolutionary psychology. Her research has included a study on how grandmothers help the survival of their grandchildren, finding evidence to support ‘The Grandmother hypothesis' that long life in women has been selected because they help their grandchildren survive. She has also carried out a project on the genetics of autism spectrum traits and executive function, finding for example that empathy has stronger heritability through the maternal line.

Mitch A

Mitch specialises in psychology, public speaking and debate. He previously worked as a social worker in Skid Row in the States, helping mentally ill individuals attain sobriety, housing and increased functionality and quality of life through psychotherapy. Currently, in private practice, Mitch provides individual and couples psychotherapy, and consultations for other psychotherapists. He also gives lectures on personality disorders and couples counselling.

Sankalp G

DPhil, Experimental Psychology, University of Oxford - Sankalp specialises in the psychology and neuroscience of happiness, social cognition and decision making. His master's thesis was on happiness and decision making, specifically how the mood we are in influences our decisions. Sankalp's current research focuses on friendships and emotions. How has COVID-19 affected our desires to make friends? If people are less friendly after, does that mean you should increase or decrease your efforts to make friends? And what are the neural mechanisms behind such decisions?
