What do you think when you hear the names Albert Einstein or Stephen Hawking? Probably that they were among the world’s most influential thinkers or that both were physicists. But here’s another crucial fact: both cut their teeth at Oxford University. Needless to say, the city has given rise to some of the greatest minds in the field and is the perfect place to study physics.
This Oxford summer course in physics is designed to cover a range of subjects to help you understand more about what it is that makes your own world spin. Looking at the big, the small and the extreme, you will get a better understanding of yourself and the universe around you. And you’ll come away from the course with plenty of ideas of your own to pursue.

ind out what makes our Oxford summer course in physics so popular in our short video…
Oxford has been central to the study of physics for centuries now, so you’ll be lucky enough to learn from tutors at the top of the field.
From the broad theories of the universe to the behaviour of individual particles, physics is about discovery. Not just of the world around us, but of ourselves too. So, based around the famous tutorial system of the city’s acclaimed university, our Oxford summer course in physics puts the focus on students. Rather than teaching a stiff, pre-set syllabus, the course is very much focused on you and your interests – encouraging you to pursue the specific areas of physics that interest you most.
The weekly tutorials are focused more around the theory of physics, while you’ll influence the tone of the teaching in the smaller, seminar-style classes. It means you get an opportunity to learn from other students, as well as receive unique access to some of the best academic minds in the field.
Dr David ColeBIO
Dr. David Cole obtained his PhD from the University of Leicester in 2012 after a career in high technology where he worked for a number of technology start-ups and software engineering companies. Since then he has carried out research on the nature of dark matter and the formation of galaxies at the University of Central Lancashire and most recently at the Rudolf Peierls Centre for Theoretical Physics where he worked on developing dynamical models of our Galaxy to compare to observations made by the space telescope Gaia. He has taught physics at undergraduate level at all the instututions he has worked at and developed and delivered a new maths lecture course at the University of Central Lancashire.
Dr Mark RaynerBIO
Dr. Mark Rayner studied at the University of Oxford for ten years, graduating with a masters degree in Physics in 2007 and a doctorate in Particle Physics in 2012. Since then he was a Maître-Assistant at the University of Geneva’s particle physics department for six years, working in an international collaboration based in Japan, and investigating the physics of neutrino oscillations. He has experience teaching tutorials in Oxford, and lectures and classes in Geneva. Aged 34, he is a British citizen from London.
For his undergraduate, Marcus read Natural Sciences at Jesus College Cambridge. He studied Physics, Chemistry, Maths, Evolutionary Biology and the History and Philosophy of Science over his first two years before specialising in Physical Chemistry during his third year. Marcus’ specialist areas were applied quantum mechanics and the study of molecular magnetic fields.
Having completed a Post Graduate Certificate in Education at St Hugh’s College Oxford, Marcus now teaches Physics at an independent school in West London. He is currently doing a Masters in Education Research Methods at University College London, specialising in the attainments and attitudes of elite students.
Why not mix it up a little?
Are you torn between two subjects, or undecided on which city to study in? The good news is that you can often combine two subjects, or even split your studies between different UK locations.
"The physics course is amazing. Absolutely astonishing. "
"My tutor, Mrs. Hila Levy was really kind and helpful, she made sure that all of the students in her class clearly understand the new concepts that she explained, and she used to give us a full feedback when we finish our work. "
"Choosing to come to Oxford Summer Courses has been an amazing experience. The course is about making friends, developing as a person, and learning as much as you can in 2-4 weeks at one of the best environments you can be in.
