We’ll also help you develop the interdisciplinary tools you need to design, enhance, and assess renewable energy systems, having studied existing and current ones and the impact they currently have on our world. Wise up to the biggest threats facing our Earth, extend your knowledge, and design renewable solutions that will benefit mankind today and tomorrow. The more we educate ourselves, the more chance we have of preserving our wonderful world. Set and reflect on ambitious goals with our support, engage in tutorial Q&A sessions, participate in an academic skills masterclass for critical thinking development, explore future career pathways through expert speakers, attend a university fair to meet representatives from various universities, and have the chance to visit different Oxford colleges for a comprehensive Oxford summer school experience.

Teaching methodology

Learn the Oxford way with tutorial-style teaching. Your expert tutor will foster self-directed learning and critical thinking through interactive seminars in small groups (no bigger than 8). During your course, you will complete two pieces of independent work (essays or problem sheets), which your tutor will then evaluate in either a 1:1 or 2:1 tutorial. Tutorials will provide you with the opportunity to discuss your work and feedback with your tutor and learn new perspectives from your classmates. On completion of the course, you'll receive a certificate and letter of recommendation from your tutor.

The course is typically structured over two weeks, focusing on solar energy systems and broader sustainability concepts.

Week 1: Solar Energy Systems (Example)

Week 2: Sustainability & Energy Transition (Example)

  • Photovoltaic systems and biogas systems.
  • Access to sustainable energy in refugee camps.

By the end of the course, students may:

  • Understand the technical aspects of solar energy systems, including solar thermal and photovoltaic systems.
  • Learn about sustainability principles and how they apply to engineering.
  • Explore the role of renewable energy in global development, particularly within the UN SDGs framework.
  • Develop skills in system planning, component analysis, and sustainable engineering practices.

Note: Learning objectives may vary based on student interests, which will be discussed during the admissions process.

Students are encouraged to do pre-course preparation to maximise their learning. Suggested resources include:

  • Write a short summary (no more than 300 words) on what you found interesting and why.

Optional extension:

  • Review technical specifications of solar thermal system components to better understand the design and planning process.

This course provides an excellent foundation for further studies in engineering, sustainability, or renewable energy.
