Learning

Outline

Physics is designed for 18–24-year-olds who are passionate about understanding the fundamental forces of nature. Students will explore the core principles of physics, from Newtonian mechanics to thermodynamics and relativity. The course will also delve into more specialised topics such as quantum mechanics, superconductivity, and cosmology, offering students a comprehensive understanding of both classical and modern physics. Students will enhance their ability to explain the workings of the universe, from the smallest particles to the largest cosmic phenomena. This course provides a unique opportunity to engage with the theories and concepts that shape our understanding of the physical world. We don’t follow a fixed curriculum—our tutors tailor the course to the group’s interests, making learning both engaging and relevant. The course also includes a masterclass on critical thinking, along with a reflection session to track progress and set new goals.

Teaching methodology

Learn the Oxford way with tutorial-style teaching. Your expert tutor will foster self-directed learning and critical thinking through interactive seminars in small groups (no bigger than 8). During your course, you will complete two pieces of independent work (essays or problem sheets), which your tutor will then evaluate in either a 1:1 or 2:1 tutorial. Tutorials will provide you with the opportunity to discuss your work and feedback with your tutor and learn new perspectives from your classmates. On completion of the course, you'll receive a certificate and letter of recommendation from your tutor.

Food and catering

Meals are provided on a half-board basis (breakfast and dinner), served in college dining halls or at selected local restaurants. Students arrange their own lunch. All dietary requirements are catered for.

The Oxford Summer Courses Experience

Physics asks some of the biggest questions in science — from the nature of matter to the forces shaping the universe. In Oxford, advanced learners explore key topics such as quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, and particle physics, while applying mathematical reasoning to understand how theoretical ideas drive real scientific breakthroughs. Discussions connect physics to cutting-edge research in technology, energy, and space — helping students see where curiosity and discovery can lead.

Learning takes place in small tutorial groups of no more than eight students, supported by personalised tutorial-style feedback on two independent assignments (problem sets or essays). Students practice communicating complex concepts clearly and defending their reasoning — core skills for higher-level study and scientific careers. With enrichment activities, cultural exploration, and life in a college-style setting, students build confidence academically and socially. Every participant receives a certificate of completion and a tailored tutor recommendation to support future university or professional ambitions.
