You’ll find inspiration in great writers – exploring how they shape worlds through words – and receive tailored coaching to push your own work further than ever. Set and reflect on ambitious goals with our support, engage in tutorial Q&A sessions, participate in an academic skills masterclass for critical thinking development, explore future career pathways through expert speakers, attend a university fair to meet representatives from various universities, and have the chance to visit different Oxford colleges for a comprehensive Oxford summer school experience.

Teaching methodology

Learn the Oxford way with tutorial-style teaching. Your expert tutor will foster self-directed learning and critical thinking through interactive seminars in small groups (no bigger than 8). During your course, you will complete two pieces of independent work (essays or problem sheets), which your tutor will then evaluate in either a 1:1 or 2:1 tutorial. Tutorials will provide you with the opportunity to discuss your work and feedback with your tutor and learn new perspectives from your classmates. On completion of the course, you'll receive a certificate and letter of recommendation from your tutor.

Yes, you can book more than one course! During the application process, you will have the option to add additional courses either before or after your main course. The total price, including any additional courses, will be displayed before you proceed.

The course is typically structured over two weeks, with each week focusing on different aspects of creative writing.

Week 1: Writing Fundamentals and the Human Side of Writing (Example)

  • Exploring motivation, procrastination, passion, and the emotional side of writing.
  • Examining how stories hang together as a whole.

Week 2: Storytelling Techniques and Writing Tasks (Example)

  • Detailed work on the mechanics of storytelling.
  • Personal writing tasks and one-on-one tutorials.
  • Crafting writing based on individual style and interests.

By the end of the course, students may:

  • Develop a deep understanding of the storytelling process.
  • Learn how to approach writing from both a technical and emotional perspective.
  • Gain skills in crafting narratives and developing characters.
  • Explore personal writing goals and receive tailored feedback.

Note: Learning objectives may vary based on student interests, which will be discussed during the admissions process.

Students are encouraged to do pre-course preparation to maximise their learning. Suggested resources include:

  • A short (1-2 page) writing sample to give the tutor an idea of your style and interests. For inspiration, consider exploring examples of great writing from Project Gutenberg or reading essays on writing from The New Yorker.
  • Prepare questions about the writing process based on your personal interests and challenges. You can explore advice on writing from well-known authors at Writers Write.
  • Optional: Consider a piece of writing you admire and think about what makes it a great example. You might use a literary critique from The Guardian's Book Reviews to help analyse the text.

Nestled within the University of Oxford’s most iconic colleges, including Lady Margaret Hall, New College, Somerville College, and Worcester College, students will experience life at one of the world’s top universities. Accommodation will be assigned based on room availability and the student's age group.

Ages 13-15: Full-board accommodations with breakfast, lunch, and dinner provided. Ages 16-17 and 18-24: Half-board accommodations with breakfast and dinner. Lunch is not provided, but local restaurant recommendations will be offered by staff.

After graduating, David worked in the field of public policy including on the Special Policy Team at Google on the Right to be Forgotten. He's since made the transition to being a full-time writer and is currently a Librarian at the Oxford Centre for Buddhist Studies.

PhD University of Leicester - Jane specialises in twentieth-century literature, contemporary poetry and postcolonial literature. An experienced academic, she's currently Honorary Reader in Twentieth Century Literature at De Montfort University. DPhil English Literature, University of Oxford - Kieron is currently a freelance poet and teacher, specialising in creative writing. His first collection of poetry, The Mortal Man, was published in 2015. He was the first poet in residence at Rydal Mount since Wordsworth, and the first poet in many years to read from his own work at Dove Cottage, Wordsworth's home. He's also been Artist in Residence at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford.
