About International Development

International development focuses on improving living standards and opportunities across the world, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. It explores how economic, social, and political factors influence development outcomes and how policies can address global challenges.

Students interested in this subject often also explore economics summer school, international relations summer school, and geography summer courses. At our Oxford international development summer school, students explore how these disciplines connect to provide a deeper understanding of global issues.

Reading and Preparation

There is no fixed reading list for our Oxford international development summer school. Instead, tutors provide tailored preparation materials approximately three weeks before the course begins, based on their academic expertise and the interests of the group.

These may include articles, case studies, or examples of development projects and policies. This flexible approach ensures students arrive prepared while allowing the course to reflect current global challenges.

How You’ll Learn

Our Oxford international development summer school is built around small-group learning, where students actively engage in discussion, analysis, and critical thinking. Rather than following a fixed curriculum, tutors shape sessions based on their academic specialism and the interests of their students.

This means each course is slightly different. Some groups may focus more on economic development, while others explore social issues, sustainability, or global policy. This flexibility ensures a dynamic and engaging learning experience.

Learn from Expert Tutors

Our tutors are academics and subject specialists with backgrounds in development studies, economics, politics, and related fields. They bring their own research interests and expertise into the classroom, often drawing on real-world examples to make sessions engaging and relevant.

Many tutors enjoy teaching on our programmes because it allows them to explore global challenges with motivated students and encourage thoughtful discussion. You can learn more about their backgrounds on our tutor profiles page.

Because our Oxford international development summer school does not follow a fixed curriculum, students can explore different aspects of the subject before choosing a specific academic pathway. This helps them better understand their interests and future options.
