This Oxford environmental science summer school introduces key ideas in climate science, ecosystems, and sustainability, helping students develop analytical skills and a deeper understanding of environmental issues.
Students learn in small groups through discussion-based sessions led by expert tutors with academic backgrounds from leading universities, including Oxford and Cambridge. By analysing real-world challenges, exploring scientific concepts, and debating solutions, students gain insight into how environmental science is studied at a higher level. If you’re ready to study environmental science in Oxford, you can apply now to secure your place.
About Environmental Science
Environmental science combines biology, chemistry, and geography to understand how natural systems work and how human activity affects the environment. It explores issues such as climate change, biodiversity, pollution, and sustainability.
Students interested in this subject often also explore biology summer school, geography summer courses, and sustainable engineering summer school. At our Oxford environmental science summer school, students explore how these disciplines come together to address global challenges.
Reading and Preparation
There is no fixed reading list for our Oxford environmental science summer school. Instead, tutors provide tailored preparation materials approximately three weeks before the course begins, based on their academic expertise and the interests of the group.
These may include articles, case studies, or examples of environmental research and policy. This flexible approach ensures students arrive prepared while allowing the course to reflect current global issues.
How You’ll Learn
Our Oxford environmental science summer school is built around small-group learning, where students actively engage in discussion, analysis, and problem-solving. Rather than following a fixed curriculum, tutors shape sessions based on their academic specialism and the interests of their students.
This means each course is slightly different. Some groups may focus more on climate science, while others explore ecosystems, conservation, or sustainability. This flexibility ensures a dynamic and engaging learning experience.
Learn from Expert Tutors
Our tutors are academics and subject specialists with backgrounds in environmental science and related disciplines. They bring their own research interests and expertise into the classroom, often drawing on current environmental challenges to make sessions relevant and engaging.
Many tutors enjoy teaching on our programmes because it allows them to explore real-world scientific issues with motivated students and encourage critical thinking. You can learn more about their backgrounds on our tutor profiles page.
What You’ll Study
Topics explored on our Oxford environmental science summer school vary depending on the tutor and the group, but are designed to introduce key scientific ideas and approaches. Students may explore areas such as climate systems, biodiversity, conservation, and human impact on the environment.
Sessions often centre around analysing data, evaluating evidence, and discussing solutions, helping students build confidence in applying scientific thinking to global challenges.
Universities That Offer Environmental Science
Environmental science is offered at leading universities across the UK, often combining elements of biology, geography, and earth sciences. Universities such as Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College London, and UCL offer well-established programmes with different areas of focus.
Because our Oxford environmental science summer school does not follow a fixed curriculum, students can explore different aspects of the subject before choosing a specific academic pathway. This helps them better understand their interests and future options.
Careers, Skills, and Is This the Right Subject for You?
Studying environmental science can lead to careers in research, conservation, environmental policy, sustainability, and engineering. Students develop transferable skills such as data analysis, critical thinking, problem-solving, and the ability to understand complex systems.
This subject is particularly suited to students who are interested in science and global challenges, and who want to explore how scientific knowledge can be applied to real-world problems. Exploring these ideas through an Oxford environmental science summer school allows students to test their interest early — you can apply now to get started.
