Student Life

You’ll study your subject guided by top academics and learn about its application in the real-world with talks from industry experts.

You’ll also get to explore a vibrant, global city as well as visit world-leading universities and companies.

A helpful pastoral team of current students from and alumni from some of the UK’s top universities will be on hand to support and introduce you to the city. You’ll also have the chance to make friends with your fellow students from around the world.

Accommodation

You’ll stay at the beautiful, secure Garden Hall in single rooms occupied by students during term time.

Following a £140 million redevelopment Garden Hall was opened in 2016, and is part of the University of London with LSE, UCL, King’s College, Birkbeck and SOAS all nearby.

This outstanding location is fully equipped with modern facilities and hosts a thriving, world-leading academic community to this day.

It’s also situated right next to a wealth of top London attractions, all within walking distance or just a few tube stops away.

Interactive problem-based learning

Our London course doesn’t just give you the chance to develop academic knowledge in your chosen subject, you’ll also have to work as a team to solve a real-world challenge.

If you’re studying Medicine you’ll be fighting a global epidemic or curing heart disease, if it’s Law or Business you’ll be running your own deal to buy a company, or if you want to become an engineer you’ll develop a solution to the global transport crisis.

You’ll work with your fellow students in small teams over the 2 weeks and you’re in charge of finding a solution, guided along the way by our expert tutors.

You’ll also develop skills that will help you later in life, at university and in the workplace. To solve the challenge you’ll need to use critical thinking, problem solving, communication and teamwork.

You’ll also get the chance to see how these sorts of problems are solved, with talks from industry experts as well as visits to the companies where people are doing groundbreaking work in these areas. It’s a great chance to get inspired and see the how academic study is solving these important problems and changing our world.

Finally you and your team will present your solution to industry experts from your subject area, they’ll give you feedback to improve your solution and process.

Excursions and Social

Our programme of excursions and social events will introduce you to some of the most exciting and important sites in Britain, allowing you to experience the best of British culture in London and beyond.

You’ll have plenty of time to explore all that London has to offer: from visting Buckingham Palace, guided tours of the nearby museums to strolling through the extensive Royal Parks.

You’ll also experience a packed programme of social activities. Our staff will show you parts of London missed by larger groups, special sights of the Thames and Westminster, and historic locations hidden from plain view.

After a day of study and sightseeing, you can get to know your peers over a game of football or dinner in one of London’s trendy local restaurants. You will be immersed in London life.

MOLECULAR MEDICINE
CURE HEART DISEASE

Heart disease is the leading cause of death globally and kills 17.3 million people every year. How can we use cutting-edge medicine to stop it?

THE COURSE:
Take this course and you’ll learn how medicine is fighting back against the biggest killer in the world.

You and your team, guided by our expert tutors, will need to come up with an innovative solution to stop this epidemic.

You’ll visit Barts Pathology Museum and the Royal College of Physicians to hear from experts leading the fight against some of the world’s deadliest diseases.

YOUR FUTURE:
You’ll build your knowledge of what it means to study Medicine at university and get an insight into how leading doctors and scientists work. You’ll get also learn more about the types of skills you’ll need to develop for your future dream career as a doctor or scientist.

The UK has produced some of the biggest films of the past few years. From Harry Potter to James Bond and they’ve grossed billions at the box office. But how does a blockbuster actually get made?

THE COURSE:
Take this course and you’ll learn the key ingredients in writing a story before turning it into a treatment for a script, you and your team will then have the challenge of getting the project financed and produced.

You’ll visit a top London film production company and have trips to the British Film Institute. You’ll learn about all of the ingredients that go into making a blockbuster.

As part of your challenge you’ll get to pitch your idea to industry experts and they’ll give you feedback on whether your story has what it takes to break some box office records.

YOUR FUTURE:
You’ll learn about the way in which the academic study of creative writing translates into the creative industries and learn how professional writers and producers use these concepts in their work. You’ll also learn how to apply these skills at university and in your future dream career in the creative industries.

BUSINESS & FINANCE

London is one of the world’s leading financial centres, and has been a hub for trade and business since the middle ages. With a stock market that is home to some of the world’s biggest companies what better place to learn about the global financial system?

THE COURSE:
You’ll explore an industry at the heart of the global economy: the financial services sector. But, it’s not all champagne and late night client entertaining; the modern financial services sector provides solutions to many of the most pressing issues facing society today.

Want to make the most of your savings? You’ll need to understand the financial products that will give you the biggest returns. Want to grow a business from scratch? You’ll need the capital to support it. Want to have good public infrastructure? You’ll need to find investors to finance it.

You’ll scope out the different ways in which the financial services sector underpins our most valued modern activities. By analysing these issues, you’ll learn to apply your mind to complex problems through the lens of different sorts of financial product.

SOLVE THE TRANSPORT CRISIS

With 1.1 billion people expected to move to urban areas by 2030 the world’s cities are facing a crisis, how on earth can we transport all of these people using the existing infrastructure? Can Engineering save the day?

THE COURSE:
London is no exception to the crisis, it’s a modern metropolis with an underground system (the world’s oldest) that was opened in 1863, nowadays it handles 5 million passenger journeys per day. But the underground needs constant maintenance, traffic on the road is constant and delays on the rail network slow down the city costing over 1 billion pounds per year, or 4.6 million pounds every single working day. How can we, as engineers, solve this crisis?

What alternative options exist? What systems are in place in other cities? How can we provide long term, sustainable, transport solutions?

Working with your team, you’ll try to develop a solution to this crisis, our expert tutors will guide you and you’ll get the chance to present your solution to a panel of experts.
