The UK has produced some of the biggest films of the past few years. From Harry Potter to James Bond and they’ve grossed billions at the box office. But how does a blockbuster actually get made?

The course

Take this course and you’ll learn the key ingredients in writing a story before turning it into a treatment for a script, you and your team will then have the challenge of getting the project financed and produced.

You’ll visit a top London film production company and have trips to the British Film Institute. You’ll learn about all of the ingredients that go into making a blockbuster.

As part of your challenge you’ll get to pitch your idea to industry experts and they’ll give you feedback on whether your story has what it takes to break some box office records.

Course Lead

SAM SUSSMAN: BAFTA winning screenwriter

Sam is an award winning screenwriter represented by Lighthouse Management and Media in Los Angeles. His original screenplay Nation of Laws won the British Academy of Film and Television Arts' New Writing Competition in 2016. His journalism has appeared in Huffington Post, Asia Times, Dissent, and Forbes and has been an invited speaker at the United Nations, Oxford Union, and numerous TV and radio stations.

Sam has taught creative writing and journalism to more than 200 students from over 30 countries as an independent tutor. Sam has also previously worked in the United States Senate, and holds an M.Phil from Oxford where he studied on a full academic scholarship.

Course Location

During the course you'll have the opportunity to visit and study in some of London's most presigious and interesting venues such as: the London Film Museum, the Globe Theatre, The Cinema Museum and the British Academy of Film and Television Awards (BAFTA). There may also be the opportunity to visit a top London production company and get an insight into how a real production company works.

Ellie is a television producer who has been involved in researching, developing, casting, filming and producing a wealth of productions, from dramatic content to documentaries.

Highlights have included working on the UK series of The Apprentice, as well as working on a variety of productions for the BBC, Sky, Discovery Channel and Channel 4.

Ellie now works at the cutting edge of production finding and producing content for the innovative company Barcroft Media, whos videos are watched worldwide by millions of people every day both online and on the television.

She is also interested in the new ways content is being developed for film and television and in some of the interesting trends that are shaping its future.
