Oxford Summer Courses at Scottish High School, Gurgaon, Delhi NCR

In the 5th and final blog of this series on Oxford Summer Courses in India our founder Harry discusses his trip to Delhi to visit Scottish High School, one of four new Indian locations for Oxford Summer Courses in 2017.

As part of our mission to share our authentic Oxford model with the world, I am delighted to count the world’s most populous city as a location for Oxford Summer Courses in India 2017! We’re working with Scottish High to host a course in India’s capital (or, to be more specific, the Gurgaon part of town).

My orientation visit to meet students and parents started with a good omen: Scottish High is a host for the Arsenal FC Soccer School (for the uninitiated, Arsenal is a football team in the English Premier League and their soccer school teaches key skills to fledgling footy fanatics). As an avid Arsenal fan, viewing the logo on the school’s sign – 10,000 miles from my home (near Arsenal’s Emirates stadium in North London) – brought a smile and sense of familiarity that calmed any residual nerves before presenting to a set of parents keen to find out all the details of the course. For those that missed the presentation, the key details are:

• 5 subjects: Business & Entrepreneurship, Computer Science, Economics, Media Studies, Medicine
• Dates: 12 June-21 June 2017
• Residential (1.65 Lakh) and non-residential (1.25 Lakh) options available
• Applications selected based on quality of personal statement (as with all our courses): apply here

Parents asked for the key differences between the city-based courses those further from town. Answer: the academic content will be the same but the activities may vary as we’re making best use of the available resources at each location. For example, whilst Kodaikanal boasts incredible access to nature and outdoor pursuits, regarding Delhi our Business & Entrepreneurship tutor Daniel Kaute has already started using the local Oxford University alumni association to find a local angel investors group to take part in the final “pitch day” for his students on the course. Meanwhile, Aditi Rajgarhia a former television anchor (and classmate of mine at Oriel College in Oxford) who now runs successful mentoring company, Mentor U, is lining up a communications workshop to help you perfect your final presentations.

These examples demonstrate how we’re making the most of what’s on offer at each location. If you’re interested but can’t decide which subject or location please get in touch – we’d be delighted to help!

Oxford Summer Courses has teamed up with Scottish High School to offer a 10-day residential and non-residential summer course open to students from across India and the world. Courses are taught by Oxford tutors on location in Gurgaon, Delhi NCR starting 12 June 2017, price 1.25 Lakh (non-residential) / 1.65 Lakh (residential).

Oxford Summer Courses at Prudence International School, Panvel, Navi Mumbai

In the 4thblog of this series on Oxford Summer Courses in India our founder Harry discusses his trip to Mumbai to visit Prudence International School, one of four new Indian locations for Oxford Summer Courses in 2017.

Prudence School used to be a resort in Navi Mumbai’s suburbs but rapid development has seen the city grow up (quite literally – there are plenty of skyscrapers) around the school’s X-acre site. Fortunately Prudence has managed to hold on to its green setting since its conversion into a school in [2008] and has made its mission to become an eco-school (see the rainwater reservoir and organic vegetable patch amongst others).

At Prudence we’re offering residential courses only, where you’ll share a large room overlooking the tree-lined fields with 1-2 other students and get the chance to taste the extremely locally-sourced bottlegourd or cucumber from garden (during term-time the student’s run a social enterprise selling the veg to the canteen and at local markets). During my short stay I can vouch for the excellent quality of the food – both Indian, continental and Korean options (the chef has a particular skill following time with Korean students). You’ll stay in blocks separated by gender with an experienced student welfare team from Oxford and Prudence taking care of you.

The subjects on offer are: Business & Entrepreneurship; Computer Science; Economics; English & Creative Writing; Natural Sciences (an introductory course covering some of Chemistry, Biology, Physics and Earth Science). This course starts on 12 May so it’s ideal if you’re lucky enough to start your vacation early in the summer.

Like KIS, Prudence offers a tranquil, natural setting to study your chosen subject with an Oxford tutor – the site has fully-equipped classrooms but the shade of the tree looks equally inviting for classes that don’t rely on equipment. So, if you prefer birdsong to honking when immersing yourself in your favourite subject, this is the course for you!

Oxford Summer Courses has teamed up with Prudence International School to offer a 10-day residential summer course open to students from across India and the world. Courses are taught by Oxford tutors on location in Navi Mumbai starting 12 May 2017, price 1.4 Lakh.

Oxford Summer Courses at Oakridge International School, Bangalore

In the 3rd blog of this series on Oxford Summer Courses in India our founder Harry discusses his trip to visit Oakridge International School, Bangalore, one of four new locations where we are taking Oxford Summer Courses on location.

Our new course in Bangalore offers a different prospect to the hilltop location of Kodaikanal. The city setting means students can take up either non-residential or residential options, mirroring our pilot course at Oakridge Hyderabad in 2016. The school is a short journey from Bangalore’s Whitefield district – known for its tech companies, flashy malls and big brands – and residential students will stay at the Whitefield Holiday Inn (in twin rooms). Wherever you stay, the academic content of the course will be the same and you’ll have plenty of time with your tutor and socialising with your classmates.

Oakridge’s site is modern, clean, green and well-equipped – perfect to study one of our most popular subjects with Indian students (Business & Entrepreneurship, Computer Science and Creative Writing) or to try out one of specialist courses in Medicine or Natural Sciences (where you’ll utilise Oakridge’s excellent labs). We’ll be posting more information on the course outlines for each subject on our India page soon.

We’ll also be offering one subject that’s unique to Oakridge India – Politics and Society. Thanks to the Grade 10 IGCSE class at Oakridge for having a particularly interesting conversation on politics with me following my presentation about the course. We’ve lined up our top Politics tutor Dana Mills. Dana will be leading her class through an interdisciplinary course designed as an introduction to key concepts studied by undergraduates reading Political Science, Political Theory, Law, Sociology, Philosophy. Caveat: you won’t come away as an expert in all these subjects but you’ll get a taste for what they entail and better understand the relations between them and common problems. Useful for any budding PPEists (PPE, or Philosophy, Politics and Economics is a flagship course at Oxford University and my undergraduate degree).

As a former Political Theory tutor I’m very much looking forward to returning to Bangalore to continue the political conversation (as we’d only managed to get through Trump, Brexit and extremist politics – lots still to cover). Academic conversations around your subject are one of the best parts of our courses (if, like me, you’re secretly a bit of a geek for your subject).

Don’t worry if politics isn’t your thing – whichever subject you take up you’ll be with like-minded students who share your passion and a tutor who’s devoted their career to researching it (so you’ll find equally geeky people who love your subject)!

Oxford Summer Courses has teamed up with Oakridge International School, Bangalore to offer a 10-day residential summer course open to students from across India and the world. Courses are taught by Oxford tutors on location in Bangalore starting 26 May 2017, price 1.25 Lakh (non-residential) / 1.65 Lakh (residential).
